Premiere CS5 Anyone?

Anyone played with PP CS5 yet? I'm interested to see if PP CS5 can improve performance without the need to upgrade CPU power.

Nuggets from this interesting PDF:

"... the native 64-bit, GPU-accelerated Mercury Playback Engine lets you edit demanding HD (Canon footage) projects in real time."

"To help get your projects started quickly, Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 includes an extensive array of sequence presets—including presets for the new Canon XF MPEG2 codec."

There's also a screenshot of the new presets panel which has a Digital SLR folder.

I can tell you from first hand it edits very smoothly, add a GPU card that is suported like a GTX 285 for a few hundred bucks and you get multiple layers of realtime effects on top of that. But even on my aging Mac which is a Core 2 Duo 3 gig with 8 gig of RAM and a bog standard NVIDIA card it is super smooth and running 1080p Canon footage out through DVI to a 1080p monitor. Wow, during testing I got a buddy to send me some Canon footage as at the tim I only had a D300s, about 5 minutes of cutting his footage in Prem and seeing at full rez and I went and ordered a 7D!

Call you tell us your exact set up? Or anything you'd do differently?

Any help would be much welcome...
Thanks!

Well, I wonder if the forum search tool isn't working, I swear I searched for CS5 with no results... can't wait to get my hands on a copy...

I went to a demo of CS5 at NAB yesterday. CS5 can make use of all the memory and CPU's that you have (you need Windows or Vista 7 or the latest MAC OS). So the more memory and more CPU's you have available the better PP will work even if you do not have a good graphics card. The graphics card with CUDA is icing on the cake.

To be honest with, I've gotten good results from using the search bar maybe twice.

My Beta test system is a 3 gig Core 2 Duo with 8 gig of RAM a $200 NVIDIA card (cant remember the model, but it is a non CUDA version) and Snow Leopard. You will need either Snow Leopard or Windows 7 64 bit as Premiere is ONLY 64 bit now. I would highly recomend a GTX 285 as that will give you loads or RT for colour grading, gassican blurs, multi channel video playback for about $350 US, also put as much RAM in your system as possible. Interestingly CPU is probably the least important compared to the graphics card and RAM

Agreed, in fact in all my demo videos I was using a MacBook 13 inch with 4 gig of RAM, with screencap and final cut pro running in the background (to show the roundtrip feature) 24 and 25 p footage was running ultra smoth 50p a little jerky but that is mainly due to the hard drive only being 5400RPM. CPU is nice, but I would spend money on a CUDA CPU before upgrading a CPU personally.
