im about to set out on some field interviews where im shooting on a provided 5D.
typically, i bring a dedicated sound guy on dslr shoots. but this shoot is just me and the interviewer.

so, im looking for the preferred method of working with a sennheiser lav + 5D. i need to be able to monitor the audio as well.
am i best advised to go with a zoom/tascam recorder or would one of the hacks+beachtek/juicedlink things be the way to go?

yeah, id assumed as much.
im guessing the zoom/tascam things will allow you to live monitor?

and, i guess there is no value to going direct into camera and using magic lantern?

Yes, you can monitor from a Zoom or Tascam recorder as you record.

As for ML... well, there is no ML for the 7D. There is for the 5DmkII. There's also a USB breakout cable available now that offers headphone monitoring from ML-enabled cameras. That said, if it's between audio on DSLR and a separate recorder, I'd still take the separate recorder.

Also, you said the 5D will be provided. Does it already have ML? If not, do you think the owner of the camera is really going to want some one messing with the firmware?

my gut tells me that second-system is the more fool-proof option.

can you not overwrite ML and go back to the original firmware?
i guess i should follow the adice i often give folks here - "if you have to ask. you shouldnt do it." ; )

hello mr zoom!

The ML installation does add something permanent to the camera. Yes, simply formatting the SD card wipes out all the stuff that ML needs to operate and the camera will go back to normal operation, but there's still a firmware update that has been written into the camera. The only risk there is, if the camera's owner sends it in for service under warranty (assuming it's still under warranty) and Canon finds the modification in the firmware, they will nullify the warranty.
