Practise/Tests for movie

Robbie Comeau

Como's back. back again
DVXuser, hello...

I want to make a 'Fantasy/Dreamy' feel movie. And I came up with a story today, and it sounds pretty good. I am going to write it soon.

Buyt pretty much, its a bout a little boy, in a forest. Walking through the trails. And has he leaves, he is blocked by a warp zone, a wall. He touches it and he can clearly see there is something blocking his way....the wind starts saying things like "leave" in a nice tone of voice. He gets frightened and leaves, and BAM, he wakes up. It was a dream, but he gets these dreams periodically in the movie. Meanwhile, there is a book, and when he writes in it, he gets responses, kinda like in harry potter. In the end (im kinda giving it away) he gets pass this "wall" in the forest, and discovers what is on the other side. It's a little girl he has been talking to in the book, and she is on the other side.

So i want kind of a fantasy/dreamy look to my film, so i did a little test today...Not so much fantasy, but more on the dreamy side!

Tell me what i can change, in order for my actual movie to be alot better

thanks!

PS- the camera movment is all done in post...it was just me filming, so i made the movement in final cut, to make it look like someone was moving the camera in some of the shots

Hmm, not sure if I understand your wish, but I think you're talking about actual picture "quality", or the look of the film (=video).

Well, the oldest and surely most effective thing for fantasy kind of picture is to use some kind of soft diffusion filter. Something like strong Tiffen black promist or regular promist will soften the harsh video quality and add a soft film-like (sort of romantic) quality to your pictures. I'm not sure this is the look you want.

Of course for fantasy, anything that is not "normar" is pretty much fantasy or dreamy looking. You could lit the scene differently, like no deep shadows, vibrant colors etc, play with slow motion etc. Unnatural motion effects will make any scene look like a dream sequence, as long as it differs from the "real" live scenes of the film.
