Practical Special Effects: Blood Burst and Chroma Key

We in Flying Sugar Studio tested a very cheap but powerful technique of making blood splatter using condoms, fishing lines and washers. The technique is described here. We used chroma key just for testing that’s why it looks so-so.

In the first video we hid the condom under the t-shirt.

In the second video we taped the condom to the naked chest of our actor and made a photograph of him without it, so I had to use this photo to cover the condom and the tape (in After Effects).

Had a client requesting that effect last year. Coming into production early next year(2K9).

We’d used DVX100, but Canon HV30 (or other HD camcoder) would have been much better. And there was too little space so we couldn't move the actors far enough from the green screen to get rid of the shadow.
