Postponing the transition to a mac

Hello,

I'm considering the HVX, and I had a quick question regarding the file format and Windows compatibility. I know the MXF file is not native to Adobe Premiere, so I would need a third party conversion tool.

I have a friend who has iMovie HD on his laptop. The HVX upgrade is going to put a hurt on the wallet, so I'd have to save up for a G5 and FCP Studio Academic. I'm just thinking here... but can iMovie HD import MXF files and export to MOV (perhaps with Quicktime Pro installed). Can I then transfer the files to my PC and Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0?

The most comprehensive support for MXF today is on the PC with Canopus Edius Broadcast 4, which lets you work with these files natively. Beyond that, Cineform and Raylight will let you work with MXF files in Premiere following a conversion to AVI.

How does the quality of post-Raylight conversion footage compare to the quality of FCP footage? Are there more dropouts associated with one option?

I don't know, I don't have a need for a converter because I use Edius.

But, you should not experience or tolerate ANY dropouts, either as part of the acquisition or conversion. I've heard of problems with FCP in this respect, but they can apparently be worked around by copying the P2 card contents to your hard drive before importing, and by using the latest version of FCP -- 5.0.4 is known to have serious issues.

At least just read the first page. Barry gives some insights into PC based solutions. You can always ask him directly about any of the stuff he's touched on in the thread too if you have any more specific questions to software he mentions.

cheers.

Remember, the MXF is just a wrapper and when converting in FCP, all it is doing is moving it to a quicktime wrapper, there is no recompression of the footage or loss of quality.

MXF is not supported by iMovie, or FCE.

FCP 5.0.4 or later will import from p2 cards and wrap the MXF files in QT.
