Possible hack: Use CF as RAM -> USB HDD?

I was looking up some options for offloading data held on the CF card to a drive (wirelessly). I came across some information implying a USB HDD could be used in place of a CF card. I need to look more into that later. However, I had a thought: Would it be possible to use the CF card as a sort of RAM to hold photo information while recording and while the camera was not actively recording, it would work on copying that data to the attached USB HDD?

Just an idea. I certainly don't have the technical knowledge to know if this is feasible.
