positive discussion on the hvx anyone?

wow, have some fangs come out on those looking for everything they might ever want in a camera! really, do any of us expect a backward compatible, future proof all inclusive camera for 5k? to me the ability to use dvcpro hd on a regular basis, still do dv and have the variable frame rates that not so long ago almost everyone was sure would be a long time away - is freaking fantastic.

lets talk about all the good things and scenarios so new people and others can find out what they can do not what they might not be able to do.

just an idea.

THE HVX IS THE S***!
(i thought we were allowed to say shiest?)

is that positive enough?....haha. No really....i think it will be great, i may not be able to afford the P2 stuff for awhile and therefore not the HD, but i'll basically get an upgrade on the DVX, and if i ever *need* to shoot anything worthy of the bigscreen.....i'll have the capability.

HVX, rock rock on.

now that's what i mean! how often do we get this kind of options on a camera? to me this will open the door to so many third party people to produce and create products to enhance what this camera can do now and later as we expand. the hvx club from evs will be a great source of rental and savings to boot with the whole p2 thing that we will be able to use it as needed for now and buy cards if business progresses because of what we can offer with this camera.

No one product fills every need -- that's why people buy motorcycles, and others buy pickup trucks.

You want to know what the HVX is good at? It's a high-def DVX, with (hopefully) all the same "mojo", but putting out native 1080/24p. And the only other camera in common use that can shoot 1080/24p is $100,000 -- for just the body! Add another $30,000 to $60,000 for the lens!

It's a high-def DVX with all sorts of improvements too -- a longer lens, a wider lens, longer zoom range, at least another gamma curve, syncable timecode, transferrable scene files, tapeless recording, and 4:2:2. What's the next-cheapest 4:2:2 high-def camera? $42,500 -- and that's interlace-only! Here you're getting interlace and progressive both, in 4:2:2, for under $10,000. Under $6,000 if you want to supply your own recording solution.

You're talking about high-def recording with four tracks of uncompressed audio. Any other low-cost HD camera that offers that? Of course not. If you want uncompressed audio on a high-def camera, even just two tracks of it, you'd have to spend over $40,000. The HVX gives you four channels of it, for under $10,000.

Think of the formats it offers: 1080/24p, 1080/30p, 1080/60i, 720 in at least 10 different frame rates (including single-frame, 24, and 60!) What do you have to spend to get a high-def camera that records 720/60p? You guessed it: about $100,000 including lens. Here you're getting that for under $10,000. And that's not all -- then they add a near-DigiBeta-caliber recording system which also supports 24p, 30p, and 60i, all in 4:3 or native 16:9, all with four channels of uncompressed 16-bit audio, all at 4:2:2 color. AND they offer regular DV to tape, again in 4:3 or native 16:9, again at 24p or 30p or 60i.

And here's something it's hard to argue against -- the unfinished prototype put out footage that was startlingly good, and easily leaps better than any HDV footage I've seen, and there are more than a few of us who saw it who agree. And that was just 1080i -- that wasn't even the best stuff yet!

Some people want a motorcycle, some want a minivan -- each will argue why theirs is superior (motorcycles can use the carpool lanes, they can be parked anywhere, they get 70mpg, they're fast, they're cheaper, and on and on... vs. the minivan which hauls stuff and ... well, there's that whole "rain" thing, y'know). Whatever. Some prefer one thing, some prefer another. Some people will cling to the notion of recording on tape, and for them, there's plenty of HDV cameras to choose from.

But for those who want something more -- those who want a single camera that does it all, and does things the other cameras haven't even started to think about -- and who can live with the limitations of a non-interchangeable lens and limited recording time -- the HVX looks like the pick of the bunch.

For me, the HVX is the only camera to get. Yes there is still questions on delivery to clients and downloading the card efficently, but I think that all of this will be solved in a short time.
If you look at every HD camera in it's class (Canon, JVC, Sony), this is the only one that has everything that we want and need.
Right now you could say that Panasonic is thinking out side the box, but I would have to say that box hasn't been made yet.

barry, awesome as always. we need to copy your reply and post it as a must read before anyone can comment on this camera!
your new book on this should warrant you to get an advance unit to start with - any chance of this happening with the jan connection? we could start a write in campaign right now!

dp, great comments, there are always issues with any manufacturer and any camera.

this is really starting out like the type of thread i was hoping and looking for myself.

Dang Barry! I might have to buy more than just one of these !!
One on preorder now.

Thanks for your great HVX200 summation!

Steve

if you simply don't like HDV - then it's the only alternative for compact HD...

and boy - what a COOL alternative !!!! :)

There are more movies all the time making it to the theater, even in limited release, that were originated on the DVX and look pretty good. How much more the HVX?

It's not that I drank the purple koolaid as some might think it's just that I can't imagine a company like Panasonic or any established international company putting out a product in the same lineage as it's predecessor and making it worse. Ok, maybe rarely in the car industry, but even then the product usually advances in many other ways that make up for what's lost.

So, with that said, I say, "drink the purple kooliad" anyway. It's good, you'll like it.

Dpdave73, you can always dub your footage at the end of the day to an ordinary hard disk and give it to your client (or toast a new HD-DVD or BR disk)... Keep the P2 thing for you and don´t risk they keep the nice toy. How about that?

the high-def DVX without logging.......wooohoooo
the high-def DVX with longer lens and wider lens...woohoooo2
the high-def DVX with good remote controls....wooohoooo3
the high-def DVX with 50fps slomo (in PAL) ......abso-f*&g-wooohooo number 4

There aint gonna be any movies shoot on HVX or "HDV" because we all sit here discussing what cam is the best. ;)

I want so much for the HVX to be as good as modern regular 16mm filmstock with Zeiss glass when blown up to 35mm. (As far as "perceived sharpness").

I don't care for DV, but would love to get out of the "film" business and go HD.

I read about all of these people trashing a camera that isn't even on the production line yet and it really irritates me.

I want this camera to be good, I am praying it is good. As much as I love the quality of film, I want to switch. I want to come home every night and view my footage right away.

We know the camera has 1/3" chips. We also know that the lens probably doesn't cost more than $5500. That is a cheap lens, it scares me. But I really am hoping it doesn't make a damn difference and this camera ends up being the one.

P2 is so great. Offload to harddrive for editing, one for archiving. HD DVD around the corner. Bring it on!

Don't worry! There are lots of people trashing the competition against this camera (that isn't even on the production line yet)... so it all balances out.

Seriously, though... It looks really promising, and I can't wait to get my hands on one. (probably March 'cause I'm in PAL land... unless I decided to buy the US version... 'cause I have no self-control).
