Portable Storage

Okay, I've done a search on it and only further confused myself! I need extra storage for use with my HMC40. I've maxed out my laptop.

I'm using a dual core MacBook Pro, FCE, and the HMC40. I'm hoping to get something with at least 1tb. I need it to be portable so I can shoot podcast video on location and edit remotely. Can anyone suggest a good option for me?

Does your laptop have the capability to connect an e-SATA drive? That could be an option...

Other World Computing - macsales.com - is a great, Mac oriented, source for storage.

They have excellent portable and desktop drives with Firewire 800 and eSATA. Just make sure you get 7200rpm drives with an interface faster than USB.

Firewire 800 - dead simple to use, bus powered, already on your MacBook Pro, plenty fast - it will keep up with my 8-core Mac Pro tower using Final Cut Pro with ProRes files shot on the HMC40 at 1080 30p
eSATA - a little faster than FW800, but it requires an MBP with an ExpressCard slot, buying the eSATA adapter (dirt cheap @ OWC), and if using a portable drive eSATA is not bus powered like FW800

And, I've not seen a tiny portable drive with a fast interface and 7200rpm as large as 1TB. You can go tiny and portable but only 500gb, or carry around a desktop drive and get 1-2 TB. I actually have both a portable 500gb and a desktop 2TB that I variously carry back and forth from work to home :cheesy:

I can second the OWC endorsement, I just spent 3 weeks on the road shooting with my HMC40. I bought a portable FW800 enclosures and another one where I threw in a 2TB drive.

I copied my cards nightly to the portable drive then every couple of days backed it up onto the 2TB. OTher raid solutions were too expensive for me but probable a better idea. And try to store the drives in different place eg in my case I should of stored the 2TB drive in another truck, not side by side with the the portable drive in a big pelican case. :)
