Portable audio recorder

What a scam!

What a scam!

Any suggestion on a reasonably priced portable audio recorder? I've been looking at the Sony PCM-D50. The only thing is, if I need to hookup an XLR mide to the unit, I have to by the Sony XLR-1 Mic Adapter which is another four to five hundred dollars. I was also looking at the Tascam DR-1 Portable Stereo Audio Recorder and M-Audio MicroTrack II. My price range is between $100 to $400.

I'm probably as big a Sony fan as anybody here (audio, video, and computers). But only Sony could get away with charging $500 for a phantom mic power box like that with a straight face. $50 maybe. I should investigate making and selling phantom power adapters. Looks like a very profitable racket.

The Fostex FR2LE has two XLRs and sounds excellent, except for the Headphone output which will not affect your final sound in any way. That will cost you less than the Sony and its adapter. You can also use Toy Car battery packs for extended battery recording.
