Portable audio recorder

Any suggestion on a reasonably priced portable audio recorder? I've been looking at the Sony PCM-D50. The only thing is, if I need to hookup an XLR mide to the unit, I have to by the Sony XLR-1 Mic Adapter which is another four to five hundred dollars. I was also looking at the Tascam DR-1 Portable Stereo Audio Recorder and M-Audio MicroTrack II. My price range is between $100 to $400.

Thanks for the response. I just checked that same recorder in BH and they sells it for $274 (I think). I didn't see where I can hookup a XLR mic to it. Is it on the bottom?

"Audio input is via built-in X-Y true stereo condenser microphones, or 2 XLR-1/4" lline/mic/instrument combo inputs with phantom power for an external pair of microphones."

You're referring to the Zoom recorder with the two XLR-1/4" at the bottom, correct?

Okay, I read that this Zoom recorder uses SD card. Can I put in any size SD card in or is there a limit to the size of the card that the Zoom recoder will recognized?

Any one know what the following are for the Zoom:

Frequency Response
Signal-to-Noise Ratio
Dynamic Range

It's not listed in BH site.

It would nice if in the future or some how I can connect this H4 directly to an external hard drive for recording bypassing a computer.

I see you made your decision, but in cas eanyone else drops by;

I have a Micrtorack and I've had nothing but trouble with it. It has a firmware glitch that the OEM can't fix, and it stops recording arbitrarily in the middle of a session. Its a shame because it has balanced phantom power inputs, but its just too unreliable.

SD card work with the Zoom H4 device? I'm about to purchase this card.

There's a 2GB card size limit with the H4. Check the manual on that when you get the Zoom, or go to the previously-referred link that will also have a list of compatible SD cards.

I have the Zoom H4, and I use it for double-system with excellent results. The best way to put it to use is to feed 1/4" line (u/bal) into it, and not use the XLR ins.

I made it through two days of shooting an indie film on a 2GB card and the 512MB that came with it, recording at 24-bit 48kHz. If you're going to be shooting a lot each day, you might get two 2GB cards. Dump the cards at the end of each day.

Just to update on the size of the card, I just recieved a response from Zoom Corporation that with the latest updates, H4 can handle up to 32GB of SDHC card. That's good news. I already purchased the Kingston 16GB SDHC card. It should be here in a couple of days.

Again, I see you've made your choice, but for anyone else out there, I didn't see this one mentioned, the Edirol R-09HR.
It can use a 4GB SD card, has a lot of the same features as one like the PCM-D50, is a lot smaller (about the size of a fatter iPhone) and $100 cheaper than the Sony as well. It's a great little recorder, the on board mics are great for what they are, and it's pretty user friendly. Just another suggestion to throw in the mix.

The Edirol R-09HR is really nice too. Thanks for posting. I hope this thread will help somone else too.

It must be a lot fatter than an iPhone if it's got two XLR sockets on it....
