from what i understand dvrack always saves bit for bit what goes to tape - no recompression or modification. So the mpeg2 hdv stream is places in a stream that sits on a dv tape - that is exactly what dvrack saves. (of course minus any dropouts due to the firewire cable - ive had a few of those)

It's really such a good help and becomes a must have on many productions. Been using DVRack for quite some time, so it's definitely a no-brainer for me.

Barry,

Thanks! I thought as much, but it is always better to ask. Have you recorded HDV direct to a laptop yet?

Sirius,

That hood is made of a material you can get at Tap plastics for pennies. It is the stuff they use on those inexpensive 1" three ring binders. Comes in black, white and just about any color you can imagine.

I've made a dashboard gps and laptop hood out of that material before. Buy about 36" of it and lay it out with your laptop. Just like those binders, the hinged portions are just made by folding the plastic into a good sharp corner. Flex it back and forth a few times to loosen the edge.

Buy a little Velcro, cut it into strips and you're ready to go. Project should cost less than $10 including a Super Big Gulp on your way home from the plastics store.

Shooting HD on the HVX? Getting an HD Rack is a NO BRAINER - plain and simple! BUT THEY NEED TO MAKE SURE ITS MAC COMPATIBLE.

I talked to a couple folks from Serious at CES. They said their #1 feature request for DVRack was DVCPRO HD. They are also looking for Mac programmers to explore that possibility. They didn't make any commitments, but they seemed more on top of it in person than they let on via e-mail or the phone.
