Polarizer and/or Vari ND

So, to be able to use the aperture and shutter speed that I want, I've been using a LCW variable ND filter. It works pretty well, but has some color shift (or maybe a vignette) on wide angles outdoors.

I've been reading about how polarizers will get rid of the bright white on over exposed areas. For instance, when filming outdoors, it'll make the trees and grass look really vibrant. But I wanted to make sure that they weren't using a polarizer in PLACE of ND, right?

So to get this look while keeping the DOF the way I want it, should I use a variable ND plus a polarizer.. or will this get bad results??

Here's what brought it to my attention (thanks Boncrek for posting the link). Check out his comments.

If others recommend using a polarizer, what are some good brands and should I just look on Amazon?
