FS7: PMW FS5 Announced.

I never expected it to be 422 10-bit UHD in full XAVC @ 250mbits, not even for a second. But UHD 420 8-bit @ 100mbits? Come on..

Same spec as their AX100 palmcorder but with the smaller 1" sensor that costs $1,650. Canon XC-10: 422 8-bit @ 300mbits for $2,500.

Camera has some great new features and of course they need to protect the FS7 but $6,500 for a 420 8-bit camera in 2015/16 is a little underwhelming, even with a fantastic S35 sensor. At least the outputs on it get you 422 uncompressed but kinda defeats the purpose of camera.

Agreed. stripped down with a prime its a pretty compact camera.

But if you cant focus cos of the poor screen/lack of off centre focus check luts in various modes.. you basically need another monitor

Beyond that I dont add much.. apart from audio and a batt for the monitor.. and a screen shade for it!

I've read a few times there are no waveforms in the FS5 ...?!?!

8 bit 4:2:0 UHD @ 100mbps might be a deal breaker....
Was really looking forward to the specs, but everything above HD is a huge disappointment.

Yes, they put a lot into the FS7 and against that the price-performance ratio of the FS5 doesn't look great. Even the external recording option could well turn out to be very expensive. And who knows when that will be available?

Is anyone else laughing their asses off that Sony managed to upload all of their promotional videos for this camera with letterboxing, even though the camera is shooting 16:9? Now it windowboxes on any 16:9 screen. I am laughing, at least.

For me the camera is perfect. It ticks many of boxes for what I do. Its closet competitor is the C100, but it offers more than that camera. If it can come in around 6,000 it would be Ideal. Its a tiny super35 camera that will cover a lot of jobs for a lot of people. For a certain style of shooter and market, I think sony nailed it with this camera. 4k isnt the wave for everyone, yet this has it, just not in the super high bit rates that other cameras have. 10bit 4.2.2 1080 from a super35 sensor, with those ergonomics, is a very nice camera. I respect that Sony even put in the effort to put an ND on it, which makes this camera very practical for me.

It might be a good raw option compared to the fs7+xdca+7q though if it does raw without the $2k xdca.

Overall seems like a pretty small upgrade over the fs700, but I think I could justify it if the raw option has the same features as the fs700 raw and isn't very expensive. It's basically an updated fs700 with very basic 4k internal and a new form factor and a few new features.

As I said on another thread, street price is $5600 body only-- $5599 pre-order at B&H

I agree with that, but they are being very cagey about the availability of raw. Juan Martinez said it will be available "eventually". They're planting the idea but saying nothing about when it will be available or how much it will cost. If it were going to be inexpensive and available soon, I think they would have said so. Hope I'm wrong.

I see Slog3 & sgamut3.cine but have heard nothing about LUTs . Can you record a LUT and white balance at the same time . That would be huge
anybody know if the improved grip will be available for the FS7?

I am glad they made a camera made for gimbal.. the internal variable ND is so brilliant, I love that! 420/ 8 bit and no high frame rates in 4k is the only thing that I don't need.... But if I end up getting money some how, this will be my B-camera.. I could see using the burst slow motion as well!

Thanks Sony
