Pmw F5 & F55

Looking forward to your thoughts on the Camera. No chance getting footage from what you will shoot?

How does one go about being a beta tester or pre release player-wither?

EDIT: I realize I quoted the wrong person...but would still love to know.

From the release:
It's ironic that with focus so critical, most operators are stuck with viewfinders and on-camera monitors that offer middling contrast and resolution. Sony changes all that with the F5. A new digital interface has given rise to a brilliant new series of viewfinders.

I really hope they know they're talking about themselves there haha

Well I read the announcements with great interest like everyone else and got to say until I read this (..No control of EOS lenses, either focus or iris. said in chat...) I was very interested in the F5.

I agree with Mitch with his summing up of the cameras.
I really like the fact that they have a camera with all the 3rd party stuff covered by themselves.

I was thinking of selling my Sony Ex3 and upgrading to the C100 and using my 5D3 as a backup and eventually move to the C300 while building up my Canon Lenses.

The F5 made me stop in my tracks but now reading that it just makes me hope it makes Canon reduce pricing.

Two great Cameras there though and it raises the bar higher and pushes the others to react.

EDIT: Reading another thread and someone speculating that there will be no price reductions but extra features in any new firmware update....they went on to say this could be 120fps....I'd settle for 50p in 720 or 1080.....that would make the c100 or c300 the perfect Cams for me.

I think we'll have a solution in hand for that very soon ...

;-D

Providing both is for better color matching between cameras. Say someone was using an F3 for a B-cam and an F5 for primary.

I'm thinking as far as zoom control goes that Sony must have realized with the F3 being in users hands for 2 years that having remote zoom control would be essential in their next hardware rev in the series. I am hoping there is a connector somewhere that has a zoom protocol going through it for people that bought the Sony zoom lenses targetted for the F3 and presumably these 2 new cameras.

Sony Paintboxes can control zoom function. The F5 & F55 have Paintbox connection. So does the F3. So all someone has to do is make a lens control interface for that port ...

You guys may think I'm a tease, but my point is that with any new camera there is opportunity for accessorizing to make it just that much better. Sony may have clicked a lot of buttons here, but there's always something interesting that can be done. I've only just indicated the tip of the iceberg.

Don't worry, we'll do it.

Mitch what would be needed to make the F5/55 handheld ready to shoot now that the handgrip isn't included (designed).

A set of handles (either rosette-based or rails-based) and a shoulder mount (either Sony's option or the ET/Shape/Tilta etc. units).

Sorry boys, when I have something ready to tell you then I'll tell you all!

The cameras don't ship until Feb. Believe me you'll hear about kitting a lot earlier than that.

Just a question, not sure if anyone knows the answer, but.. when recording slog onto sxs cards on the f3, if you have a LUT enabled on the monitor out, it records to the sxs card as well. Does anyone know if this is the same for the f5/55, or can you have a lut applied to the monitor out, and not to the sxs recording?

First, thanks for the well-wishes to AbelCine and our staff. Our NY office is closed until we (and NYC) can figure out how to get it opened and staffed. Our email is down but Chicago and LA are open and doing business.

Second, while you guys have hit on some of the great features of these new cameras, I fear you're missing some of the amazing innovations they include. Two formats can be recorded at once -- either one to the RAW recorder and one to the new SxS card or TWO DIFFERENT FORMATS TO THE INTERNAL CARDS SIMULTANEOUSLY. That's amazeballs. It means you have your editing proxy and master file at the same time without transcode. Or your master file along with a RAW archive copy for future use.

...

Mitch, first off, I'm glad that the NYC staff is okay and that the other offices were able to help out :).

As for the dual recording, it fell flat w/ me b/c the proxy format is not DNxHD or ProRes. That kind of makes it not so useful :(.

You can chose to apply or not.

I'm very interested to see how smoothly the SRMaster codec (at 4:2:2 and 4:4:4) can be incorporated into our editing workflow. The drag-and-drop simplicity (and SPEED) of recording to ProRes and DNxHD is what's made external recorders (and the Alexa) so popular to my mind. If Sony can work with the NLE manufacturers to get a similarly easy workflow in place, then it'll be a spectacular option.

If not, my PIX240 will still have a place in an F5/F55 system.

It's quite straightforward to become a beta tester, just become best friends with an award winning DP who has shot extensively on Sony cameras. Fortunately, I know a guy ...

We're going to start testing today and we'll shoot something over the next week or so. We won't be able to release any footage in the interim unfortunately. The cam still has early firmware so we'll be limited in terms of features and frame rates but I'll try and keep people posted.

We're not planning to do a million tests, just work out how to expose it properly and have a look at the raw workflow. Then we'll go out and use it in anger. Looking forward to it.
