Pmw F5 & F55

I think its safe to say that with the amount of add-ons Sony is releasing for these brothers - it marks the end to lots of 3rd party stuff.

There will always be something else people need. I can already think of several items and AbelCine will work with our manufacturers on solutions.

Incase anyone missed the chat, I hacked into the Sony Headquarters database and pulled off a transcript of today's amazing chat.

I don't know how long it will be there until I am summoned to remove it and they find my secret hiding location... but please do enjoy it while it lasts.

Thanks for posting this; one thing I noticed towards the end of the discussion is Sony is considering a loyalty program for us F3 owners. Possible discount maybe?

I am not scared. Not even a tiny little bit. Honda makes wheels for their cars, yet third-party wheel industry is a multi-billion $$ business.

Well I read the announcements with great interest like everyone else and got to say until I read this (..No control of EOS lenses, either focus or iris. said in chat...) I was very interested in the F5.

I agree with Mitch with his summing up of the cameras.
I really like the fact that they have a camera with all the 3rd party stuff covered by themselves.

I was thinking of selling my Sony Ex3 and upgrading to the C100 and using my 5D3 as a backup and eventually move to the C300 while building up my Canon Lenses.

The F5 made me stop in my tracks but now reading that it just makes me hope it makes Canon reduce pricing.

Two great Cameras there though and it raises the bar higher and pushes the others to react.

EDIT: Reading another thread and someone speculating that there will be no price reductions but extra features in any new firmware update....they went on to say this could be 120fps....I'd settle for 50p in 720 or 1080.....that would make the c100 or c300 the perfect Cams for me.

I really hate giving money to all one company but honestly its nice to see so much support offered by Sony behind these new products.

Regarding lack of EOS lens control, way back I had a suspicion that Sony wouldn't control EOS lenses. It would just have seemed somewhat oxy-moron'ish but perhaps also somewhat foolish on their part considering both Canon and RED cameras control EOS lenses.

Looks like actually I cut off some of the final comments, so just fixed that and they are included now.

I'd choose the F55 over the RED EPIC, all other things being equal. Global shutter for one is huge. ...

I agree. I think too many people believe rolling shutter only affects fast pans and bright flashes of light. But steadicam, shots outside from a moving car, etc, can also exhibit that odd jello effect and bring on mild discomfort akin to seasickness.

So the new cameras can shoot in both S-log and S-log2? Seems a bit overkill to have both when S-log2 will preserve more. Any reason to not use only S-log2?

Providing both is for better color matching between cameras. Say someone was using an F3 for a B-cam and an F5 for primary.

I'm thinking as far as zoom control goes that Sony must have realized with the F3 being in users hands for 2 years that having remote zoom control would be essential in their next hardware rev in the series. I am hoping there is a connector somewhere that has a zoom protocol going through it for people that bought the Sony zoom lenses targetted for the F3 and presumably these 2 new cameras.

I think the main question is how needy can we get and how innovative can these accessory companies be in adapting their know-how to other areas within cinema.

Today I can't help but flash back about nine years when I was shopping for my first HD camera. Sony's F900 was still new, and I remember wondering how the hell I could justify spending $100K for a camera and lens.
Looking at the two new F cameras and the comments here makes me smile. At the risk of sounding like an old fart, some of you guys here have no friggin' idea how great you have it.

Curiously, the F900 is still on the Sony website and it's still $80K. What's up with that?

Funy I was thinking how the guys in 10 years time and how fantastic they will have it.
No more Rolling Shutter....Slow Motion ala FS700 will be the norm...F5 Specs at a 5k price point.......the luck %$£"

Over 10 years ago I was wrestling between a VX700 and VX1000... Today I'm debating between F3+Red camera for a F55....

Hmmmm.....
