PMW-F3 Firmware V1.1

A user reports on "the other board" that after the firmware update, his F3 no longer recognizes MxM cards if inserted with CF cards. If he inserts empty MxM card and then CF card, camera recognizes. He had not as of that initial post actually tried recording to the cards. Might be worthwhile for someone who has updated to give this a try and post results.

Not CF cards. I think he means SDHC cards. If they don't work there are going to be a lot of very angry people.

Just got off the phone with POSC. It seems that even though the notes state that the S&Q knob will be able to perform the same functions as the rotate knob on the back of the camera. That process is actually not supported in this version of the upgrade. They will be getting back to me with more info. Funny but this was the feature I really would have used the most.

The hdmi/sdi simultaneous out put is really usefull. I can send a signal to the ki pro, and the monitor without looping back and forth, or risking a passthrough corruption.

Well POSC gave me some bad info. After reading on the other board S&Q will work by holding down the cancel button and pressing the S&Q button. If you want to go back then hold cancel and press S&Q to return to original function.

Another useful output feature is the 1.5G ports being available through a menu option when you are in 1080p29.97. Previously, it only turned on the A-port when in 1080i mode, as I recall.

Note: if the any of the dual-link ports are activated, the reports have been your battery life goes down, as they do use juice.

Andy Shipsides has given a breakdown of the new features on the Abel Cine Tech Blog:

I read through Andy's blog and didn't see anything about SDHC cards in an adapter being disabled by v1.1. :Drogar-Thinking(DBG Has that been confirmed, or is that more false info?

EDIT: It seems you still can per page 5 of the Supplemental Manual.

Which means someone is spreading a lot of false info about this camera and these upgrades.:furious3:

False information? Why would I lie about my combination not working, just trying to help others with the same combo. Get a grip.

I've upgraded my 3 F3s, one with the adaptor, two with SxS. Now none work properly with the adaptor.

There are a number of different 3rd party adapters. Some work with the new firmware, others are glitchy, and some just don't work with the new firmware at all.

The fact that some still work while others don't doesn't really suggest that Sony in intentionally disabling 3rd party adapters, more likely, they just don't bother to test the firmware against them, and the problem is incidental.

Sony has never officially supported the 3rd party SDHC adapters.

For anything mission critical you should be using SxS anyway....

I didn't mean to imply you were lying. Sorry if it seemed that way. That's why I did a separate post.

I only pointed out that Sony recommended not updating from an adapter.

Another person earlier had stated that the S&Q knob didn't support the menu access as advertised. However, they just weren't doing it right.

Does not work with Hoodman adapter cards

Does not work with Hoodman adapter cards

My Hoodman Raw adapter cards do not work with F3 1.1 firmware. But my MxR adapter cards work with my Hoodman Raw 16gb Sdhc class 10 cards. My Transend 16gb SdSc cards work with my MxR adapter cards. I have returned my Hoodman Raw adapter cards. When I say they work I filled the cards at 60fps in Q&S mode for 56 minutes and the cards changed over fine. I also did 15 takes per card. The Hoodmans are not read as soon as you put them in. I also put the footage thru XD cam transfer no problem.

I do not work for any camera company. This camera and card combination will be shooting a Disney TV series tomorrow. (Loud clothes and all. Heaven help the colorist)

Weird -
My hoodman Raw adapter and HoodmanRaw class 10 steel card do work after the upgrade. Haven't tried it with any other SDHC cards. All I did was put the card in sdee that shwed 55 min and shot for a few seconds , nothing like Michael's test though.

FWIW my MxR with Sandisk 32gb's work fine after the upgrade. Has any one noticed how the display information on the EVF has now moved right in towards the 4:3 centre of the screen and obscures the image. On the LCD, the status displays are in the original positiosn on the sides of the screen. I think it's a bug in the firmware.

Why on earth would someone use a media other than the real Sony sxs cards? Seriously! Thats like shooting a feature with film from an unknown source and purchase date. Why risk with THAT part of your system?

If someone has battle-tested their adapters and in satisfied with the performance, well, go for it. And hell, I have two hoodman adapters... and emergency use SDHC cards. But the key word is emergency. The client pays my bills, and he pays me to get it right. Early on with XDCAM I had one screwup where I deleted a card before ingesting it. I went through hell to get the footage back, and I still lost 10 seconds that weren't recoverable.

Ultimately, if you're doing professional work, you owe it to the client to use gear that's going to work without fail. The SxS cards aren't *that* expensive...
