Pluto Short Film

Made this for a 7-day film competition (written, shot, edited, scored, delivered). It was a lot of fun and my first go at shooting with a DSLR. Hope you all enjoy!

Stock 550d, 18-55 and 55-250 kit lenses. Extra gear (follow focus and external monitor) would have made life so much easier.

hahahaah..made me laugh..what a story you have there...I don't like the LIGHTING but I guess you only have 7 days for everything right?

Sorry for the slow response. I'm very pleased with how the film turned out and especially coming from an $850 SLR! I would have loved the use of a good lighting kit but sadly all we had access to was 2 500w floods with barn doors (very similar to these). The boardroom scene was lit with what we had and we ended up using it as a play on the distance of the outermost planets. As far as the look is concerned, I tend to shoot my films as close to what I want as possible and don't grade the footage at all besides fixing exposure with some curves in post. The outdoor shots were orange tinted simply from the natural lights and a daylight white balance. One of my favorite things about using the DSLR was the ability to shoot with so little light, and I think that makes a lot of difference in image quality for guerilla filmmaking.

Every film you make is a learning experience and this one was very educational for me. For my first shoot with a DSLR, I definitely was missing the usual video camera parts (audio system, large LCD/EVF, and exposure tools). I found that the picture was wonderful, but the whole process took longer than usual and with a little more effort (worth it in image quality). The usual workarounds would have helped (external LCD, dual system sound, etc.). At the very least, I was provided a juicedlink with the DN101 for audio, however, it was just before our first shoot and I had no time to figure out AGC defeat, levels, etc. and resorted to playing back the footage on my laptop between setups for verification. You can tell I figured out the AGC in the boardroom, but not in the classroom (first shoot). We actually lost audio on some good takes in the boardroom from a dead 9-volt in the audio box. After the experience, I would say I could do some great work with an AF-100 and some high quality (non-kit) glass, provided I can find some way to pay for it.

I appreciate your comments and I really would like to know what others think about the film!
