Plugging a pocket drive into the HVX200

This may have been discussed before, but I cant find any threads that answer this exact question.

Is there a way to plug a mac formatted pocket drive into the HVX200 giving the drive power and the ability to copy off the P2 cards?

NO! Both the USB and FW bus on the HVX do not supply any power. You will need an external power supply for the drive

YES and NO, I use an on-the-go battery powered drive to transfer from P2 by just pressing the button on the drive. It does a little under 1gig/min. There are a few out there, so do a search, and YES, this has been discussed here already. BUT - It does have to be formatted Fat32 of course the mac has NO problem with that.

didn't someone use an ipod as a hard drive device with the hvx200?

didn't someone use an ipod as a hard drive device with the hvx200?

didn't barry green report a year or so ago when the hvx200 first came out that someone-perhaps one of the japanese early adaptors-was using an early generation ipod that was battery driven and firewire enabled. i remember a very early thread about that. perhaps the original poster can use "ipod" as a search word under various hvx200 categories and report back. at the time, ipods were more costly then present. i do also remember that once the ipod is used as a drive the hvx200 will wipe out the ipods operating system and allow it to only be a hard drive thus also wiping out the ipod's capabilitiy to again be a mp3 music player.

i hope the above is helpful.

be well

You can reformat your ipod to fat 32, then it is nothing more than a battery powered hard drive I have seen this done, but the transfer from P2 is so slow, and not a good use for the ipod. Get yourself a battery powered drive and go that route, it is faster and cheaper than the ipod. Then you can still use your ipod for music, pics, and movies.

any links to battery powered hard drives that have been successfully used for this?
This would be much better than lugging around a laptop and external drive to offload footage.

This is the one I used for about a year. The 80G version is $139.00

BMS2OTG80U2 80GB 2.5" SPEEDANO2 ON THE GO USB 2.0 w/RECHARGEABLE BATTERY

The manufacturer's site has a complete description but a higher price:

The thing I liked about this one is that it has two different sized USB ports so you can use the same cable from the camera to the drive and then turn the cable around and connect from the drive to your Mac.

This drive worked well for me but I now use the P2 Store - Faster and it doesn't tie up the camera while you offload your footage.
