PLEASE PANASONIC : give us the availabilty to change and customize the clip name !

with the future capability of FInal Cut Pro X to import without transcode...
how change during importaion the clip name... if there's no more transcode ?

So, please give us quickly the availability to custom the clip name as Sony do it on EX1, EX1R, EX3, F3 !

I can imagine a post production company manage the clips on a 60 days shooting (a behind the scenes of a movie) with some clips which have 60 times the same silly name : 1.MTS, 2.MTS, 3.MTS...
imagine the editor... so i've lost the 5.MTS... where is it in the 60 files ?

We want to do it on the camera, not after the unloading !

So please, help us !!!

THANKS

totally agree. get the clip name change in at the very top of the data chain, so it trickles down through everything.

...and so you can get rid of space# in the name
- underscores and no unix wildcard characters please!

my Nuke just doesn't like them...

For us CS5 users, this is a problem NOW. I am FLABBERGASTED that this gaffe got through their whole development system! It's like no one at the company bothered to look at what would happen if a professional tried to use the camera for anything other than a demo. Worse yet, I just got off the phone with a support guy at Panny who had no idea what I was talking about!

I am about to embark on a project that will last several months and result in gigabytes of clips. If they can not find a solution now I'm selling the AF100 and shooting on DSLRs. I'd rather deal with the mess from those beasts than to have to transcode every clip just so I can name them, or try and sort out thousands of clips with the same names in post - what a mess!

AT LEAST the user should have the option of sequential clip names ACROSS SD cards. This could be a firmware fix, and if so they should get it done TODAY. At best the camera should be able to record the date in the clip name. I HOPE this is possible in firmware, and I HOPE that someone over there realizes the gravity of this brain fart.

Just set up the clips in different directories. While I agree with this request, and would like to see customized clip names, it is not a problem if you keep different reels in separate folders.

I agree, we certainly need at least date info in the name. But the whole structure of having your clips inside a strange folder system...'Private', 'AVCHD', 'BDMV', 'Stream' etc is appalling! I know that .mts files evolved from DVDs but it has no relevance in a professional video environment and should have been an issue that was dealt with long ago!

Although I'd like to be able to name the files before shooting, I create a folder by date (say, 2011.4.13 - dvxuser), then card subfolders (1,2,3, and so on) where I dump the complete directory structure.

Create a bin for every card in CS5, and a folder for every card on your hard drive. I do multi-cam and multi-card stuff with my HMC150 all the time and it's never an issue... I just store them in separate labeled folders and bins.

I don't even bother creating the bins. Drag the individual (complete) card folders into CS5, and it automatically creates the bins, and starts conforming footage.

This is kind of a solution but it falls over if one has the need to create an EDL.

EDLs are based on Source Tape IDs and do not have a facility to recognise Source Folders ( as in a clip based workflow)

THANKS, this seems to be the best workaround. But you still loose timecode data doing this, and I still think Panny should come up with an immediate firmware update that puts the date into the clip name.

An update quick !

yes an update and quick !

or anyone in Panasonic can explain why we cannot manage ourself the name of the clips !

AF101 is a fantastic pro camera with am amazing "cinema look like", and i really don't understand why the name of the clip has been managed like a toy camera...

thanks.

I'm FLABBERGASTED, too! We all managed quite nicely with P2 random abstract numbers and letters. Hasn't anyone ever heard of logging? Every time I import with Log & Transfer in FCP7, either from the card or download bin (thanks MKFOTOS) I take the time to identify each scene file on every reel and re-name it appropriately with a progressively changing take # using 'Custom Name with Counter" which also has 4 other naming options. Timecode stays intact through out the process. A few minutes of logging this way saves hours later when in post.

I do this because most of my work is Doc/Interview based and I like to create a separate scene file for each question. While editing it allows me to link specific questions and answers with multiple subjects. B roll, on the other hand, is quite self explanatory and requires less logging. And yes, I edit with transcoded clips.

In response to TacoTim, Shooter and Vcfilms: I see your point. I edit 90% of what I shoot but I see where a client may take files elsewhere to edit and create the problem you three describe.

Just curious but why do you (and others) need to rename the clips in a tapelss workflow?

Why does it not suffice to use a description column in the Clip Bin when logging and selecting takes.

I am suspecting that it is a workflow that comes from not editing the files natively ( ie using transcoded clips).

Enlghten me.

BTW- I did use that workflow when capturing (digitising) from tape but discovered in a tapeless workflow.. that it was a pointless exercise for me.

Well, one reason is that i'm not always the one editing the footage. Often I'll hand off the raw footage to the client and in some cases those clients
are, shall we say, less tech savy than they should be. Having multiple files with the same name just adds one more pitfall for them. I prefer making their experience as bulletproof as possible for them. That means that i now transcode for them before i hand off footage.

Another one is if a clip happens to go offline. With p2, i'd just do a global search for the clip name in the finder and bingo, there it was. Now if i have a clip go offline and it was called Clip34, guess what, i've got about 50 files with that name. I can still find it by tracking down the name of the folder it was originally in, but it's just not as quick as it used to be with p2 and unique filenames.

I think it's just plain easier to keep things organized if at the beginning of a shoot, you could tell the camera to use filename surf_may_2010_xxxx and the camera would fill in the xxxx with the number of the shot. It doesn't seem like too much to ask for. Those of you who don't need it could go on having your files named clip1 etc.

I guess that using the metadata filename is the solution provided.

Personally I would like to be able to just prefix the filename with say a reel (Card) ID eg A, B, C, D... and I would like to do it from the camera. Similar to setting a TC but in the Card Function Menu.

How about we add that function to the Rear Wheel ?

yeah, but i haven't found ANY way to make meta data at all useful in a FCP workflow. Has anyone else?

Yes, this is exactly what i want as well.

HAHAHAHA, awesome shooter, thanks for that. Made my day.

My clients often ask me to custom name the files when shooting. I dont always do the edit, often time just pass off footage. My ex1 did this beautifully. So yes I agree, why is this not possible with the AF-100. Could a firmware update do it? Sure there's workarounds, and valid one's at that. But for us that often just hand off footage in it's raw format, it'd be nice to have the option.
