PLEASE HELP, question about new DVX100A.

Re: PLEASE HELP, question about new DVX100A.

I have to decide what to do with the camera today and frankly it's driving me crazy to finally having it sitting here, boxed, and not being able to open it without 100% confidence that everything is OK with the camera.

$3300 means that this camera will probably be the next 3-5 years of my "filmmaking" life.

Willoughbys has been friendly so far and I will let everyone know how it all turns out with them in the end...

Re: PLEASE HELP, question about new DVX100A.

Ken---Do you have any idea why all the DVX100A's were inspected during a one-month time period?  They must have been looking for some defect and it scares me to think they might have missed it, or that it could surface at any time.

savethestars, your camera is fine. The reason why one month was chosen was simply because Panasonic conducts random QA (quality assurance) tests on DV products now and then, and these tests require actual shipping products, those units customers actually receive. In this way, they can assure that the products customers buy are fine.

This is related to that silly recall rumor posted a while back to which Jan Crittenden herself responded to the person who posted the rumor:

"Kevin, your dealer is not an authorized dealer and thus has no direct line to Panasonic for all of his inside information, he has none. Ted only reported that we were doing a QC (quality control) check. We do that sometimes. We normally do a 100% QC on the DVCPRO50 product and occasionally we do a DV product. The DVX100A's number came up. That is all.

I hope this helps,

Jan"

So, as you can see, the AG-DVX100A's number simply came up for that month. If anything, your camera should be particularly fine.

Curious as to where I got that quote? Please click here to visit the thread on DVInfo.

If that doesn't calm your nerves, I don't know what will. Of course, if you're just unhappy about it all, just return it and that should be that.

Re: PLEASE HELP, question about new DVX100A.

stars, i purchased from willoughby's w/ the ok from jan crittenden from panasonic who confirmed they were an authorized dealer...i checked them all over the net and have been getting A+ ratings. the day i purchased my dvx100a, my salesman nar had mentioned that the panasonic rep had come the week earlier to get them trained and acquainted w/ the upcoming ag-dvc30...opening the box all the way up and checking to see the hour meter ain't gonna hurt ya if ya decide to return it...if you're going to be paranoid, return it...although i don't think you should...if the hour meter shows 00000H, start using the thing...

Re: PLEASE HELP, question about new DVX100A.

Hi_ the cam that I got from Pana with the tape on it works fine, and appeared to be new with 0 hours on the meter, but the box had that tape on it...i did not had any concerns because I knew that the camera was comming from Pana Broadcast Service as an exchange for my other one that was faulty.
So, what I think is that if yur cam has the tape is because for some reason it stopped by Pana service...why? I do not know. If the cam was "normal" it did not have to be at Pana service at all. Pana ships the cams to the dealers from another location, so again, if it was at Pana Broacast Service in Elgin, IL is because there was "some" problem...

But you don't have that, you seem to have a QC'd camera.

Re: PLEASE HELP, question about new DVX100A.

Thanks again to everyone who responded. This is a summary of my experience, some thoughts and things I've learned:

1) I was concerned because $3300 is a great deal of money to me and believe me, even though I was so excited about the camera I was pulling my hair out, I had to make sure that all was well. Also, my concern was further elevated by all the bad stories you hear about the Brooklyn camera companies with low prices. I ordered my camera from Willougbys.com because they are an authorized dealer and they offered the DVX100A at a price somewhere in between the Brooklyn dealers with a bad reputation, and the Brooklyn dealer, (B&H Photo), with a good reputation. I thought, if it's a legitimate dealer, why not save a few hundred dollars over B&H? I wouldn't save a few dollars just to get any gray market camera, but this deal was solid and reasonable...

2) Willoughbys.com is an authorized dealer, as confirmed by Panasonic.

3) Willoughbys.com was polite and understanding regarding this matter. I think it's because if you are an authorized dealer you've got nothing to lose by exchanging an item back and are therefore not trying to weasel out of anything.

4) Panasonic assured me, like a few of you mentioned, that the tape on their box was a result of extra Quality Control on all cameras manufactured in January and February.

5) After all was said and done I would not hesitate to recommend Willoughbys.com to anyone.

6) It's time to get shooting.

Thanks again!

Re: PLEASE HELP, question about new DVX100A.

B&H is in Manhattan...

I recommend stopping by for anyone in town... it's sort of Willy-Wonka like in there...

There was no particular reason, we just did it, like a pop quiz. It was the first month that we did not do a 100% on the SDX900, and there was time to do another product and they elected the DVX100A.

Hope that helps,

Jan
