Please help an HVX noob.

I have rescently purchased a new HVX. I have an older PC, and i am thinking of buying a new Mac Pro at Mac World in S.F. on the Jan. 15th.

I have a ton of questions, but i'll start with, what would be my best/cheapest option of dumping footage in the field? I need to get something rolling ASAP. I only have one 16 gig card right now, and i am doing full day shoots of mountainbiking in the forest.

My second question is, how will i go about getting my P2 on to my new Mac Pro?

I am working with about $3500 to get all of this done, including the new Mac.

Sorry to sound like such a noob, but that is exactly what i am.:embarasse

Right now with a Mac Book Pro and you HVX you can dump to footage VIA the firewire port on the camera, all you do is hold the MODE button on you camera (From MCR mode) and it will move to PC MODE) or you can get a DualSystemsAdaptor http://www.duel-systemsadapters.com/?productid=DP-0001
As far as space goes if you are shooting more than your Mac Book can contain you'll need a bus powered USB 2.5in drive. Its important to remember that you then only have one copy of the footage and perhaps dumping to both the internal drive and the external is a safer option

If you only have one card, you're going to be in a pinch no matter what your situation is. You can't take the card out and keep shooting, so you're required to take breaks. I'd consider investing in another card, even if you can only afford a used 8GB, it will give you some opportunity to keep shooting and have someone else copy your footage off the card with the duel adapter.

Make sure to write protect your cards before inserting them in the adapter, and install the latest drivers and firmware.

Nah, the one card thing isn't really an issue for me right now. I have time to dump in the field a few times a day.
Like i said, i only have $3500 to spend, and i need a new Mac, and something to dump P2 to in the field.

You could also consider spending $500 on a PC laptop to handle the dumping in the field and save the rest of your budget for other hardware.

Thanks for the info. Could you tell me a place to score a laptop for that price? What kind/model of laptop would work best with the P2?

Look at the bestbuy, circuitcity, staples, and officedepot ads in the Sunday paper.

I've seen PCs with Cardbus II slots selling for $299.00.

or just go online at those sites, or ecost or esbuy or some place like that.

or try google.
