Please help a DVX newbie to get going.

Hello everyone.

I just purchased a DVX100a and should get it in the next few days to start working on it. I have used pretty much every Sony prosumer camera in their lineup in the last 7 years and this will be the 1st time I will use a Panasonic, so it is going to be an interesting learning experience.

The camera:
DVX100a - Never used with 0 hours. Kept in the original box since purchase.

Application:
85% sports games
15% events (i.e. recitals, weddings, etc)

Issue:
In the past, I have only used Sony DVM-60PR tapes and have been very happy with them. Considering that I use the same tape 3-4 types total for the sport events, I have never had an issue.

Keep in mind, my partner is only on Sony tapes and we probabely have to exchange tapes and run each other's tapes in our cameras.

The 3 tapes that I am considering using and sticking to are:

  • Sony DVM-60PR
  • Panasonic AY-DVM60EJ
  • Panasonic AY-DVM63PQ
1) Is it going to matter what brand I go with as long as I stick to that brand?
2) Between the 2 Panasonics, is the PQ going to give me extra benefits that will outweigh the extra cost (over a year worth of tapes significant amount will be saved with the cheaper tape)?

Thank you

Pick a brand, either Sony or not Sony, and stick with it. But, if you are going to have to use Sony at all, even in swapping tapes with your partner, just use Sony for everything else.

I use to have 2 DVX's and I used one for sony and one for panny and never had a problem. so you should be fine as long as you stick with one brand.
I'd say just use sony tapes so you can play back your past work if you wanted to. plus sony tapes are pretty much sold at any local store.
panny tapes are harder to find...

Thank you to both of you.
I get a good deal on Sony tapes at a local BJ's. My only concern with them is that "wet tape" issue which I was not aware of until I started reading stuff on this forum.

Could someone give me some insight or maybe direct to a link where I can read about these technologies and its impact on the heads?

thanks

from what i;ve read here the wet tape dry tape thing is only an issue if you are mixing the types. Sony uses wet and the other brands use dry. If u stick with your sony's ur better off (as the others say). If u use the sony then use the panny...the sony will leave back the wet residue on the heads i believe. thats just about the extent of my knowledge which i got from this site. But its enough for me not to mix. Stick one...and ur fine.

Panny tapes are also harder to find where i am...and sony's are sold everywhere. If i knew this before i prolly would have started with sony. luckily though all the other tapes are dry...so i have a Maxell or 2.

Seems u'll be shooting alot outdoors....get polorizing filter (hoya or b+w) a Uv filter and maybe an ND filter (if u want more ND than the built in)
