Interview audio was from a Sennheiser EW100 G2 Wireless Lav
I realized after I shot this that the Zoom H4N has an AGC in it, which apparently is "on" by default. I haven't been able to take a look at it just yet, but I have a feeling that's what happened to my interview audio. A train passing by completely ruined any speaking, and it shouldn't have. This was also a bit more rushed than previous episodes because an MTA employee under the impression that filming in the subway is illegal was threatening to call the cops. Rather than stick around and having to deal with that whole mess, we did what we had to do and quickly got out of there.
