Playing back tapes on a different camera...

I have been told to not use my DVX as a tape deck.

I have an older Canon Optura 20, which I was thinking about using to play back my tapes.

Will that be able to play back 30p or 24p footage correctly?

Sorry man, but have you ever tried to use the "Search" function? It is absolutely useless.

If the questions bothers you that much, don't respond to it. There are hundreds of threads. Not every single one is going to interest you.

Hi agcohn,

Well, I have a Pan102AE (PAL) too since August last year & have been using it to both record video & play back video to be uploaded into my NLE (Adobe Premiere Pro) Since I bought my DVX in August, I have not cleaned the tape head & still able to upload good-quality video to my NLE.

I've heard others advice to use a cheaper camcorder as a tape deck to upload all your video clips to a PC, but I've also heard others say that the quality of the video will not be as good, because it's uploaded from a cheaper camera.

In fact, a while ago, I recorded some video from my 1CCD Sony consumer camcorder & put those tapes into my DVX to be uploaded. Surprisingly, the quality of the video looked much better uploading from my DVX than when uploading from my Sony consumer cam :)

Anyway, I invite more comments.

Comment: "Uploading" from DV tape to NLE is digital copying. There is not and there can not be any quality difference, as long as the camcorder can read the tapes without dropouts and other mistakes. Too many of those and it shows as pixellation and chekkerboard type artifacts, not "loss of quality" in the sense we understand it. Digital copy: either 100% clone, or none.

Is there not a low price good DV tape reader like the memory card reader.. would make sense, no?

Also: I think it is okay to ask this question again as the other recent threads about it were ambigious about this...

For some reason there are no cheap DV tape decks, is should be possible to fit the tape mechanism and some electronics in a box an sell it for $200. But no, they cost more than two or three cheap cameras...

There even used to be a DV tape transport for a PC drive bay, that could be used as a backup device. Haven't see that around for a while. Not cheap either.
