Kind of in a bind. In the middle of a shoot and just started receiving a red x while recording in the upper left hand corner of my lcd screen. I had never seen this before so I went to playback to see if anything had been recorded. Playback strobes between a blue screen and broken up images of things I have recorded. I then took the tape and put it in an external miniDV deck and it plays fine but I am still rather uncomfortable going forward. Any ideas? Anyone know whats going? I'd really appreciate it.

Dirty heads. Run the cleaning tape as a quick fix, but don't rely on that. Have them cleaned.

Yep, that's exactly what it is. Terrifying when it first happens to you! But the quick solution is to use the head-cleaning tape.

I've been having some trouble with this recently as well. I have been meaning to clean my heads via Barry S's directions with isopropynol, chamois swabs, and rubber rejuvenator for the pinch roller... anyway, I cleaned the roller, but haven't gotten a the cleaning solvent for the rest of the parts, so I (VERY GENTLY) wiped the recording head and various other parts horizontally with the swabs.
To my surprise, I still got the red x. So today, after running around trying to find the isopropynol, I went to a local production studio and they told me to just go ahead and run a cleaning tape through for just a few seconds. I did this twice. The cam started recording fine. I was thrilled!
Then the crap really hit the fan... the x came right back, and playback keeps going to straight blue. Now, if I let the cam sit for awhile, it regains functionality. I'm so lost. Am I going to have to send the bad boy in to get checked?
P.S. there is about 70 hours on the heads. The cam hasn't taken any bad spills and has not been put through any severe weather except for some cold LAST winter.
