plan to switch tapes

been using the canon tapes in the a1 but for the price they dont seem to be any better than the cheaper tapes.

Are the canons any better? I dont see it but wanted other opinons. Feel like just throwing away money on the canons.

considering getting something like these. Panasonic AY-HDVM63AMQ

You don't need to buy as expensive as that AMQ series, they have a thicker backing to cope with a lot of shuttling in pro edit suites, that's what the Panasonic release notes said .. and BnH have it as discontinued anyway. Read down ..

I've been following all these DV tapes for years.

My Pana 83min MQ series was discontinued about 3yrs ago, this is the tape I'll be using when my MQ stocks run down.

83 min is 2 microns thinner than the 63min .. no problem, but clean all the dust off top of your cam before you open it .. keeps the dust out and stops dropouts.

Using Pana tape always use Pana DV cleaning tapes, buy 2 at a time, you can't tell when one is about to run out .. only run it once through even though the label says you can use it twice. You don't want to put crap back on the heads .. that's marketing hype for ppl who baulk at paying for a tape you only use once. HTH

Cheers.

Be very careful switching tape brands. Some brands use a wet lubricant, while others use a dry lubricant. Mixing these two is the best way to "gum up your heads." Whenever I buy I new camera, I always choose what media I want to use before putting the first one in, and stick to it EXCLUSIVELY. Adds a couple of years before you need to be serviced.
