Pizza commercial shot using the HPX300

that burger looks way tastier than the pizza.

I kinda agree.

I'm a fan of all things local, so I'm not gonna hack this apart too much. If local advertising were to die, wouldn't a little piece of America die as well?

All kidding aside mvetanen, I'm with you. I'm aware of the factors of working within low-budget confines. It's the story of my life. Time and budget are usually a huge factor.

Post your work online, take the critiques, and hopefully learn something for the next shoot.

Hi Iawriejaffa,
I visited your website and took a look at your video. Some shots where great, some where mediocre, and some where just terrible (do you even color balance your cameras?). The point, just keep in mind that everyone can find fault with anyones work...I can find mistakes and problems in just about any Hollywood film or TV show...though I know that they are doing the best they can with the budgets and time constraints they have. If you ever have done any commercial work it really is amazing what is done with insane budgets and impossible shooting schedules.

Anyway, I got more commercials to shoot now and a made for TV movie now. So things are working out well :)
take care,
Mark Vetanen

I've replied to this before, but it was a little too blunt obviously and was deleted. Id like to direct attention to the mods. What purpose does your obviously personally motivated opinion have... about my video work, when this thread only exists because you have posted a video here asking for feedback. Is there a particular reason you single me out, when JR Hudson largely agreed with my sentiments too? Wanting to discuss my work - and to criticise it childishly just because you didnt like what i had to say about your own, (which i dont even believe was that damning or untrue) is simply a silly attempt tp discredit the value of my opinion and assuage your ego. If i did that for every person that didnt like my entry for Quest fest for example, our thread would have been even longer than Rodneys hehe.

you guys need to chill out...

I also disagree with this. The OP posted and folks commented. There was disagreement but nobody was obnoxious. Exactly what the forums should be about. Free discourse. You should restore the banned post.

There are other forums that discuss the HPX's & DVX's that we could all go to that are much more open to discourse. In fact on one of them a fourm VIP is the most caustic but usually apologizes when he knows he has offended.

Well I'll use some of that free discourse to disagree with you and support the mods. I fail to see the value of a thread - especially on a website for professionals - that has reduced to members bickering about who's more talented and who needs to "grow a pair."

This isn't Jerry Springer and - as professionals - one would hope comments could be kept on a professional level. Respectful disagreement is one thing (after all, I'm the one who first questioned the tone of the initial response). It's when responses resort to bickering and personal attacks that moderation is needed and appreciated - at least by me.

lol. after reading several of Iawriejaffa's posts, i too watched his videos... i was expecting some really amazing work shot on a RED ONE. talk is cheap.

it is quite possible to give productive and valuable feedback without ripping someone a new asshole right out of the gate.

Keeping that in mind... (even if the initial feedback is on the harsh side) if you ask for feedback, you should expect it, and err on the side of NOT taking it personally. However, I don't recall the poster saying explicitly "here is my clip. rip it apart, I can take it". That may be implied by the act of posting your work for feedback, but a little tact isn't asking all that much. particularly when the thread gets personal in a matter of a page or two. Relax. Post with a bit more common courtesy towards each other. It really isn't all that much to ask... in other words... everyone need(ed) to chill, and take a step back from the keyboard. for real...

You should restore the banned post.

Thanks for telling me how I should do my job. I won't tell you how to do yours should you decide to start your own forum and run it however you see fit :)

Anyways, back on topic.

lol. after reading several of Iawriejaffa's posts, i too watched his videos... i was expecting some really amazing work shot on a RED ONE. talk is cheap.

What kind of immature post is that? I dont know what the most juvenile part of it is... your 'talk is cheap' line from the video playground, or the fact you were expecting an 'amazing' showreel to be shot on a... block capitals, RED ONE.

The mod has CLEARLY illustrated that the original poster asked for feedback, i took time out my schedule to provide it from a professional perspective, so did JR Hudson and our sentiments were similar. So the original poster makes a tirade about my work (completely randomly) and then you twerp... decide to try and provoke with this bs. Why should anyone post feedback if this is the reaction there going to get? Its completly unprofessional.

I work full time professionally, won the odd short film award at minor festivals, including Creative Vision for this forums own Quest Fest, and my company has won business awards too. Modest, local but tangible, and the kind of success and credibility that that most of the video small business owners have garnered over years of working.

That i should have to say this to an immature statement (really... a red...) is a joke. What if you ever wanted to work with me for some reason in future - or ask for my advice? Think about it, what purpose then does just popping on to attack someones work (not discuss) have? Especially when its not even the purpose of this thread.

The shots are quite nice.

But the girl appears to be enjoying the burger which does not help. Hes eyes are closed in some bites and the activity in neck muscles at that point implies quite a lot of enjoyment. It obviously tastes good and we get a bad taste banner instead, refering to the easthetics. The actual taste sells more fast food than its easthetics.

The message hits the customer psychologically in pretty annoying ways. Many people want to taste the burger in the first few seconds at least. I bet 90% would say that's a pretty impressive burger. I don't even eat burgers but I would try one of those:) Then the aesthetics of the smeared running sauce make them uneasy with their previous feeling. Making people feel bad never sold anything. Those who still like the burger get a banner that informs them that their choice is of poor taste. They identify with the girl and they are instantly degraded.

The cheese that runs in threads when the shot changes is contridictive to the message because the aesthetic of the image is similar to that of the dripping burger. The first frames of the pizza in full screen are horryfing IMHO.

The actual pizza is way too thin and simple, and looks like a bad deal compared to the burger, even the plagiarised burger. Isn't value a key parameter that sells fast food over a meal at a french restaurant? The burger could be smaler, overcooked or undersaturated.

I have to agree, seemed more like a commercial for the burger than the pizza. She made me want to go out and buy what she was eating. The slice of pizza was just lifeless in comparison.
The oversaturated look is actually used a lot in different commercials, so no complaints there, that is an artistic decision. But as a sales tool, this piece comes up short.

It's obviously capable of doing pro level work.

In my opinion, the people who are giving the negative comments towards the video are right. It helps NO one to lie and say something is good when you don't think it is. I thought it advertised the burger and not the pizza, and I thought the shot was just dead. So was the lighting. There is no excuse for it other than the obvious that I wont say. I can honestly say that it takes NO time to compose a shot in any situation/budget under 5mins or less that could have been more dynamic or visually interesting than the one given.

If you ask opinions from professionals you are getting it. Everyone starts somewhere, and everyone has shot some bad footage in their time. But the people on here who seem to think we need to sugar coat everything are just doing more damage than good. If you just say "yeah looked good, keep it up" to everyone, NO ONE would get any better at what they do. Sometimes the truth hurts, I've heard it all and im still alive and shooting as a living aren't I?

Stop attacking professionals for giving their opinion, if they want to say they dont like it and/or give negative comments then let them. Its either going to push someone to try better, or make them think twice about shooting again. Either way it is a service to them, how would anyone get anywhere if you didnt have to make it up the latter? Negative comments are GOOD in their own way. So suck it up and move on.

As for people saying that this shows the HPX300 is a workhorse or capable of shooting pro level footage... how the heck does this show that?... in fact how does any video show that? guys its not the camera its the operator. Stick a RED One or Viper or Dalsa in the hands of a kid who has never shot anything, and see what happens. Then take a camcorder for maybe a thousand dollars and put in in the hands of an A.S.C. member and see what happens. Stop blaming the camera for good or bad footage, you can only do that when it limits your ability to do better, not when you are the limiting factor. The only thing limiting in this camera is its rolling shutter issues with moment. but please dont tell me a video can tell you its worthy of pro work or not. There is a reason why some huge tv shows are still just shot with older "lower level" cameras, but isn't network tv pro level?. Learn your craft before blaming cameras, or saying that a camera can make better looking footage, because its just not true. If you want more latitude, or no rolling shutter issues, better light sensitivity, or more resolution then pick a camera. Other than that its not going to help you one bit in any other way to make a shot look GOOD that's up to the cameraman.

If you want to attack me please do, I can take it, I am a professional and I do my job. I come from New York and hearing reality makes this state great and its people as well. But if you are starting name calling, then go somewhere else I can take harsh criticism any day, tell me you hate my stuff its garbage and you wanna throw it down a hill... that's fine (I know its good anyway :-p ). but the second you start name calling, you loose my respect and my ability to take you seriously as a person and a professional.

These are my opinions.

I didn't say the commercial showed it, but that the camera is capable of pro level footage. I've shot with one and have seen the results. Sorry I didn't make that clear.

Good point, thanks for the clarification, that reads better now
