Pixel Refresh & Sensor clean - stops banding?

I could solve the problem of banding, buying a light kit.

+1 :D

I really wish I wasn't so OCD and would buy used gear on eBay for my job...with all these "defective" GH1's out there I bet the deals are great as people switch to Canon in the hopes of making their footage look like their Vimeo hero! j/k

Seriously though, I can make my early model GH1 band...I can make mud...and I'm sure if I tried hard enough I could make the strap lugs fall off. I shoot weddings, and have some pretty bandy/noisy/ugly footage from using the kit lens in dark venues. But it still looks better than a 1/3" prosumer camcorder does with the gain cranked up.

I just find it bizarre that on a "film-makers" forum that people are so surprised at shooting a movie with a $650-$1100 camera at ISO 1600 and then wondering why it doesn't look like it came out of Hollywood.

Not that I'm not excited about the thought of a FULL FRAME Nikon D700 replacement that will shoot clean ISO 128,000 at 1080/24p with HDMI out and no recording length limitations. I've got plasma to sell. :D

I'm wondering why I'm shooting a well lit scene at 200-400 iso and wondering why its full of vertical bands that make the footage as a whole look like crap.

I recently took my GH1 into to get a sensor clean as I was seeing weird patterns in low light. Admittedly I was being over picky, but I could still see it. It was almost like a veil over certain areas of flat colour. The reason I noticed it was because the area of disturbance didn't move, leading me to the conclusion it was a sensor issue. I did the sensor test and it was really filthy. I took it in and waited a couple of days. When I went back they said there was a problem as they tried to clean it and to their eyes it was clean as a whistle. They didn't charge me so I took it home fearing the worst. But when I did a sensor check again (f22 focus on infinity and aim at a clear sky) it was considerably cleaner. It still has a few spots but nowhere near the amount. I did a timelapse and was shooting f22 with long exposures to blur trees etc. So I was able to clearly see a dirt mark. in the sky. I have since bought my own kit to fiddle with this issue myself. The thing is the sensor is behind a glass filter. You cannot access it and that is why my specks look out of focus. They are not on the surface of the sensor but on a glass surface in front. This effectively threw the guys who were cleaning it as they had as yet not come up against this issue.

I have also used the pixel refresh and sensor clean just for good measure.

Take a look at Red Giants website. They have a new filter called DeNoiser and it looks just the thing for low light noise on DSLRs. I tried it and it is really very good. Works in FCP and AE.

all the best

Yeah.. it must just be a camera to camera variable thing. I don't think it's fair to just tell someone "use more light" because obviously it is still showing up in well lit scenes so it is something to do with the sensor. I have seen it, and it is ugly when it happens, but it went away, and I am happy now.

tried it, didn't work.
previously tried 'burn-in' for 30hours, didn't work.
still getting horrible grid pattern of colors. this sucks.

if it's that bad there must be quality differences in the chips themselves so either send it to panny for a fix, or buy a new body.... they are cheap enough.... just make sure you get a hackable one.... hackable ones are getting scarce now... soon I bet we will see a spike and they will actually go UP in price.

Really? Maybe something to do with both these actions being crazy voodoo science? I haven't done either... and refuse on principle to do them in the future. :2vrolijk_08:

blackout:
i am definitely NOT sending my hackable cam to Panny just so that they can cripple the firmware.
and i just went through the stressful process of finding a now rare hackable version and do not want to struggle with that process again, just on the off chance that camera will be better.
but thanks anyways.

wanna trade cameras then?

Has anyone sent in their hacked GH1 in for repair? Is it documented that they will actually unhack it? I don't know.... your warrantee might be voided... but you can pay them to put a new sensor in and tell them specifically not to futz with your software hack. I doubt they would "unhack it"
