Pixel Peepers wanted on GH2 vs GH13 clips

Can you guys tell which looks better.

I did a rough test between my GH2 and GH13 both in 24p with a Canon 50mm fd lens at f1.8 . All settings are manual, Film mode Nostalgic contrast -2, sharpness -2, saturation-2, noise red +1. white balance 5600k. shutter 1/50. iso was set at proper exposure as per the cameras meter

You can download the original files from vimeo

Impossible to tell, as in your GH13 shot the vertical pane is done out of focus, unlike on GH2, hence making this last one look more detailed.
The best way is to fix foth cams on a broom stick, manually match iso's, and shoot simultaneously (assuming you have two similar FD's).
Good luck!

Quicker AF on the GH2?

Quicker AF on the GH2?

This could be the reason why the focus seems askew on the GH13...
Just a thought, but I'm no expert.

I'm really interested in the GH2 though.

Doesn't take a pixel peeper to see that the aperture value of the lens between the two shots has changed. Gh2 is more stopped down. You can tell by the shape of the bokeh.

it's also nice to have both samples in the same video even with some overlapping shots where you wipe between the two locked off in the same position. I prefer a locked off camera with movement in the scene to try and get the exact same frames in both cameras so when you compare pixel to pixel it is much easier, oh and everything should match as best it can, f stop, lens, ISO, focus.

Both cameras were set with the same fstop, same lens and overall set-up. The only difference is the ISO values. The GH2 is more than a full stop less equal to the GH1. ISO 160 on the GH1 = ISO 400 on the GH2. As far as focus goes, it is a shallow depth at 1.8 I focused as best I can on the centre most forward object, with a rack focus at the end.

Rather than leaving the aperture all the way open, you might be better to stop it down to F7-F11 that's the sharpest range for those FD lens I think.

It'll do 2 things to make for a better test. 1) it takes minute focus differences out of play 2) the higher detail scene will stress the processing and codecs more.

Thanks for the tests.

Then you must have bumped the aperture ring or something because there's no way these are the same aperture value:

Left is GH2, right is GH1. GH1 changes size a bit (gets smaller) but it's not the size I'm talking about, it's the shape.

Thanks for checking this out Ben. I didn't bump the ring, it was lock to 1.8. Interesting result. Maybe its the different sensor size. What gets me is the differnce in ISO rating between the 2 cameras.

Nope I know it does not. Sensor is the culprit - There are some big differences between the 2 - Most not in good favour of the GH2.

There is only one thing that can change bokeh shape and that is aperture value.

Agreed. Different shape bokeh, and 1+ stop of EV, can mean only one thing. To the OP, I'd retest.

Edit: I'd go further to say, that if I were a betting man, I'd say the lens mount didn't have the aperture arm lever in place by rotating the neck of the mount, leaving the iris wide open. It's happened to me loads of times. The corona on the bokeh screams wide open.
