Pixel Aspect Ratio Conversion Question

If I'm looking at a DVCPro HD clip in QuickTime Player, say, and want to see it display as widescreen (as it should) I multiply the wide dimension (960) by 1.333 and get 1280 (more or less), which is great.

But if I have a DV clip under the same circumstances and follow the same logic (720 x 1.333) I get 960. I've read other places it should be 854 (720 x 1.19). Anyone know which is it and why? I see numbers and begin to sweat. Thanks for any insight.

Every format has its own pixel aspect ratio.

4:3 NTSC DV = .9
16:9 NTSC DV = 1.2
720P DVCPRO-HD = 1.333
1080 PAL DVCPRO-HD = 1.333
1080 NTSC DVCPRO-HD = 1.500
