Pirates 4: On Stranger Tides

I really enjoyed the film. I would buy this on
bluray but not 2 and 3 at all. I'd even go see this one again. I think the fun was brought back.

I agree across the board. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm baffled why Rotten Tomatoes has it rated so low. I always go to RT to read an assortment of reviews, yet I'm finding myself agreeing with Roeper more and more often. He gave it a B+... which is about where I'd rank it as well. If you enjoy the pirate world, as created in the first installment.. then I expect you'll enjoy yourself yet again. I was smiling when I wasn't laughing... as I find the articulate and concise manner of the pirates' speech highly entertaining... it's like they all went to college :)

I could also see it at the theater again... I don't know if this film made me like Ian McShane even more in Hot Rod... or if his role in Hot Rod made me like him even more in Pirates... but either way I couldn't stop smiling every time he was on screen. For that matter... I really have a good time with the Jack Sparrow character as well. I can't imagine anybody else in that role.

Just good fun, which is what made Pirates 1 so great... when they tried to make it more than that, in Pirates 2,3, it sucked. IMO

It was still worth seeing at the cinema. Definitely felt like the magic wasn't really there.

Okay, just had to sit through this a second time (dragged by other family members). First time was a digital projection, this time was a film projection. Unquestionably, it makes a difference. The digital projection may be more accurate, cleaner, crisper, etc., but it definitely had the "Red" look. It wasn't the same. The film projection, with all its flaws, all the dust and scratches and glitches, well... it just looked "better". Maybe not technically, but subjectively. It just looked a little less "video".

Really noticed a lot of blown-out skies on the scenes on the ships... I don't remember the other "Pirates" films looking like that, but haven't seen them in forever...

I am seeing this EXACT same thing between digital and film projections. Honestly, I would rather go to a film transfer then BACK to Digital if I had to, or buy some high res film grain transfer to lay over the image. For whatever reason, it just looks cheap and I can't explain why. When I watch RED footage on my friends 60" Projection HD Screen... it looks SO nice, and part of that is because the screen itself has this weird grainy texture laid into it.

There's something else going on with RED shoots as well, in that a lot of people are avoiding tungsten lighting. It really makes skin look gross, IMO.

ANd, lastly, I want to start experimenting with 16mm @ 2K on RED, specifically because of the soft and noisy image.

All of this would be moot if we could just shoot film...

Well of course as long as digital tries to "look like" film, film will always be superior.
An Elvis impersonator could never be "better" than Elvis, even if he was a better singer.

It's not just impersonating, though. It just looks flat. Lifeless. Or even dull sometimes regardless of all of the other elements.

Enjoyed this ..thought the fight scene............spoiler where the Penoloppe Cruz's character was introduced just dragged on forever.
The music was way to loud there and felt that the filmmakers we're trying to cover up a "generic"( as some might call it) fight scene .
Thought the 3d glasses made the skintones look alot better which was a first.
It was ok, havent seen part 2 and 3 cause I just cant stand Keira since part 1 :)

I love the Pirates franchise... and I love pirates, swords, mermaids... johnny Depp... But this was the end of the line for me. I fell asleep 3 times and my partner walked out.
The action was disconnected from any form of motivation other than spectacle that i just couldn't stay interested... I wanted to. I really did. But it was overkill for me, like the Transformers sequels...
Box office success doesn't surprise as imo it would have done that no matter how good or bad the film was. Pirates has a HUGE fan base, and Johnny Depp's is even bigger.
