SHORT: Pillow Fight

Between features we created this oddball little short, Pillow Fight. A friend worked with the girls (who'd had no previous fight choreography training) off and on over about nine months, then we shot this in two days, which was probably a bit too much to try to do in that amount of time! Had great fun making this and hope you all enjoy the craziness and show your friends!

haha that was brilliant !!!!

*** spoilers *** At the first headbutt I burst out laughing, then the hole in the wall finale was magic, kudos to you sir !

it was nice to watch, good fighting choreography, good shots

Only thing that I found less where some of the Foley sounds... some of them didn't match what was happening, like at 01:25, the sound of the pillow there is to much

I think for the pillows hits you used to much the same sound...

If this was just for fun, or to test something, then thanks for showing it and ignore all of the below...

Quick Review (if I were asked my opinion about a festival entry) -

I wish it was funnier, or went somewhere. Once the initial set-up joke was apparent; it lacked the comedic impetus to actualize the punchline. If I was the producer and was funding a reshoot I'd

Put the girls in skimpier attire, or have them progressively get more naked as the skit went on (due to the fighting)
Add more effects, breakaway tables, lamps etc.
Get a good makeup artist to show the mounting effects as they fight
Make the reason they're fighting stronger, part of the script/conflict-reveal in the end - the script needs a rewrite
The resolution was mishandled, and went nowhere besides the laugh of going through the wall (which wasn't bad)
Pay a UFC star a one day shoot fee to be the father. That way, at least the entire premise would make sense and be a better reveal than a cliche'.

Thanks for sharing it. :-)

Thanks everyone! It was purely for fun between feature films. We wanted to do something silly and cheap... although it ended up costing way too much (building a set, ect). I couldn't rationalize putting more money into something that's just a fun little youtube video.

Just based on the short, I wouldn't mind seeing a feature of yours - seeing what you could do with more time, resources, moolah etc.

Cheers.

Appreciate that! Have a really fun one that we start shooting on in May that I think is going to be great. There will be some underwear in this, but in much smaller doses.

That was a lot of time and effort put into production, and it pays off. It looks fantastic, nice work. You really can't go wrong with cute girls in their underwear pillow fighting.

Thank you. It was definitely a lot more work than we'd anticipated, but was a fun project. And yes, the subject matter wasn't horrible either :)

Yes, girls in underwear is sufficient production values for me to over look almost anything else...

But one of the things I've noticed about many fight scenes, and this one is no exception, the 'camera' feels like it is sort of a distant bystander... rather than 'inside the action'.

I'd recommend the following clip for edification... sure it's 'brutal'... but watch the camera work move in close, the slow mo... etc... Even with 'comedy', I think some of the shots could be used.

For girls in undies perhaps the brutal beating slo mo is a bit much... but I'm sure there are other visuals that would do well with slo mo that would be more appropriate...

Some times the POV was a bit off.

For the finale shot of breaking through the wall, I could see that shot being busting, and I use that term loosely here... right into the camera, using perhaps a long lens to keep the distance... but still a crash right through the wall at the camera would have been better than the camera off to the side.

On the Juggernaut wall break through sequence, there are a couple of techniques, one was a 'from the side' shot, but I think the blast through at the camera, or the camera follow through, are more exciting than the side shot.

Lot of fun to watch. Great short. I agree with dre83 on the Foley, and would add that the audio at the end was a bit odd. Seems like you got excellent sound on the dialog at the start (or fantastic ADR) but not the end.

But hey, I'm quibbling with what is really a pretty fantastic short. Great job.

Thank you. The entire film is ADR'd and foley'd (from a lack of equipment we had for these shoots). We actually just went in and got better audio for the dad scene today, but unfortunately there's no way to update the video on youtube. Thanks for all the nice comments everyone!
