photo lens mounts?

It's possible this has been discussed already, but is there a chance that the RED will have the option of using still photography lens mounts?

I mean if it was $40k, I'd say who cares; anyone in that budget range can afford and rather use PL lenses.
But since it's going to be only $18k and affordable for most videographers, I think that would be really nice to be able to use old Nikon lenses and such.

Any word on this?

Red plans to offer many lens mounts, the lens mount as you can see in the prototype is completely modular.

This will rock if true. Slap your EOS lenses on there, and you can really keep costs down when you're just starting out. Your biggest outlay after the camera will then be the storage device.

which it seems the roadmap has plenty of affordable options for already.

Jim said in one of the interviews that he hopes to work this out with the manufacturers of various still photography lenses by the time Red is in production.

I believe Nikon's F mount is now in the public domain, but I could be wrong. Aaton offers Nikon mount adaptors, I know that much, and I'd read that Zeiss' new ZF primes were taking advantage of the fact that the F mount had become PD.

Canon's EOS mount could be tricky, just because EOS lenses don't allow for iris control except through electronics. Canon FD mount lenses shouldn't be a problem, and because it is an older mount it may also be in or nearing the public domain.

I've got a fair amount of great EOS glass, so I hope this could happen.

Great ! I am now sitting on a half a dozen 25- to 30-year old amazing Nikkors which will be more than happy to start a second career ! :love4:

It would make a hugh difference in the overall purchase price of the camera, so it's a good move for RED to have these mounting options availalbe.
less obstacles = more sells, and the added price for a new lens will definately be an obstacle for some

This would be excellent if they keep lens mounts this flexible. The application I am interested in using RED's camera for, well, I would rather not be forced into using a huge cine. lens.

Wow, I didn't even know about the different mounts and I already ordered camera 172.

I would love a Nikon mount. High quality Nikkors are relatively cheap compared to PL mount cine lenses.

Why do cine lenses cost so much more than (most) slr lenses?
The mechanics behind the focus ring are also quite different, and more complex. Still photo lenses are designed to have a relatively short focus rotation range so as to enable the user to quickly reach proper focus. Cine lenses have a much longer rotation range to make it easier for the focus puller to rack focus.

A follow focus device is kind of mandatory and yes slr lenses breathe more but the sharpness difference is not that great. given the price dif. it is really a great option if you have a limited budget. I can't wait !

I would hesitate to make too broad a generalization about the quality of SLR lenses, particularly for 4K, until some testing can be done. When SLR lenses are used by visual effects companies on film cameras or converted and remounted for motion picture use it's common to test many lenses of the same focal length from one manufacturer to hand pick the best ones because the optical and mechanical quality can vary a surprising amount from lens to lens. But as you say, with a limited budget there really is no better alternative.

Yes, when you figure the budget angle slr lenses particularly manual Nikon slr lenses are very compelling. I would add that a good part of the price difference with cine lenses is the volume of production. Also keep in mind that still photography and high end digital photography is way beyond 4K.

Spatial resolution is just part of the equation. When lenses are used for motion picture work, the mechanical performance of the lens takes on equal importance and every flaw is magnified at 4K.
