phone conversation audio effect

Guys,

I don't know much about audio editing/effects. I have a clip recorded in an audio studio. Mono, 48khz, 24bit. This is a line of dialog that supposed to be coming from the other end of a phone line in a short film I'm working on. I'd like to make it flat, but crispy, like hearing from a phone handset. So how do I process this piece of audio to make it sound right?

Thanks.

Shaun

There is a box that does this kind of thing. Roger Nechols has a plugin that can filter like a phone, Izotope has a plugin called Vinyl that does a pretty good job (and is free - do I hear a winner). The plugs should work on any Mac system and I think any VST host on a PC. The other way is to play it back over a phone and record it, low tech but very effective.

Any Equalizer filter will do it

Any EQ filter or plugin can do this. The quick and dirty explanation is to just eliminate the lower frequencies in your audio. Or for an even simpler fix, drop a HighPass filter on the audio clip. Start by cutting off frequencies below 500 Hz and adjust to taste. Around 750 Hz cutoff sounds like a nice tinny phone to my ears.

yes, i remember the professor from my film school told me that just cut the high and low frequencies, and you will get the "phone sound."
Hope it help.
