Philip Bloom's initial GH2 review & video

Yeah, thank you very much for spending the time to post those links Peter. I've scoured the threads about the GH1 audio thing and there is extensive information. I guess i'm just hoping to hear someone say, for doc and ENG work, you can put the audio recorder on the shelf.

What was the problem? That was tomato paste not ketchup. I thought it was siracha for a second lol.

[OT] never seen something like that here in Italy  [/OT]

Joking apart.
Which kind of GH2 is using Philip? A Japanese version or a preview of the upcoming european version?
Am I missing something?

Thanks

As is usual with Bloom's work this looks really good - I don't want to be a negative nancy but Bloomy boy did you do any wide shots with deep depth of field. Nothing in this shoot is pushing the codec so of course you are not going to see mud. Locked down close ups with massive shallow depth of field don't push the codec as we all know - and 24 mbits is fine for that. I'd love to see the results you get shooting wide while dollying with massive city /street action or crowds ect lots of movement in the whole frame is where I had issues. I have no idea if the camera I had was pre or final production. Fantastic to hear that the HDMI out is really usable this will sway me to pick one up.

Again nice stuff, and now I'm hungry.

Philip shot this cooking video using a pre-production PAL GH2 loaned to him by Panasonic. As noted in his blog, this cam has a dead/stuck pixel on the left side of the frame. (He removed the bad pixel artifact using software in post.)

He also bought a retail (production) GH2 NTSC cam while he was in Japan. Like all GH2 cams authorized for sale in Japan, it has Japanese language-only on-screen menus.

Even if the sound capabilities are no better than that of the GH1 have you considered using something like a Beachtek DXA? I just shot documentary for several weeks in Indonesia with a couple of GH13's...the topside (non-underwater) acquisition was done with a Beachtek and a variety of Rode & Sony mics. The Beachtek simply bolts under the GH1 body and allows the use of phantom powered mics ( always a plus), provides direct gain control and audio monitoring (sort-of) ...and knocks out the AGC.

I still used a Zoom H4 for longer ambient sound recording, but the onboard recordings of synched sound were very acceptable.

EU's tax regulations. Otherwise, it would be considered camcorder under the law ;-)

And how much would that tax be? I find it utterly stupid that your camera is crippled because a tax law. The most cheap ass camcorders (like 100 EURO) can do just that... so that tax can never be that high. I would be willing to pay 100 EURO more they don't cripple it. They could even do a paid firmware upgrade for people who are willing to do just that. I looked at importing a US model but that would be like 300 EURO more expensive, with 1 year warranty instead of 2. Let's hope the GH2 will be hacked soon...

They want it as much affordable as possible :-)

So it looks like a lot of the speculation that 25p not working the way it did in the GH1, was a bit premature?
I'd go with the GH2 like that and get an amazing bonus of better low light and 24p with a higher bit rate. Not bad for the money!

Hi, did you use GH13 also for underwater shots?
Eventually could you give me some feedback?

You could always import from one of us commonwealth nations, we get it cheaper than you lot anyway :)

Good idea, was thinking that non euro pal models have no limit in video, stupid. Panasonic are bananas anyway, why not just make one firmware instead of these vaiations, japanese only f/w, pal only f/w, non euro pal f/w, Panasonic you should give us all the options, do they realise people go on holiday/work in differnent zones etc? doh, and it would be nice to be able to switch pal to ntsc and vice versa anyway.

I would say yes for European models, I remember before the GH1 hack, people would talk about buying a Pal GH1 from Australia.

The law is mad in europe, why we are even in the European Union is mad, we have our own currency in the UK, which is a lot stronger than the euro and we are paying 2x to stop Southern Ireland from falling into an abys, madness.

Europe is a project, (also) an idea, is a way more than regulations (speaks who also did a graduation in law with specialisation in economics :-)

The pound worths nowadays more than the euro yet, but it isn't as strong as the euro has been since its introduction (speaks who is also based in London since then :-)

That said, UK will adhere to the euro, it is only a matter of time, believe it. The largest EU economy oblige ;-) FYI, UK only held the pound against the Dollar and especially the Yen, because there is EU. And yes, because there is the Euro. If not, all of us had gone with the actual (global) crisis and we wouldn't be here talking about this camera now, for sure :-)

...That said, UK will adhere to the euro, it is only a matter of time, believe it.

The Great British Pound is too... British. So I doubt it. ;) Besides, the current economic crap going on in the Euro Zone isn't exactly encouraging Brits toward using the Euro.

Britain is like a mini continent. Foreign language knowledge is very low, ties with America are high... Basically there really isn't much motivation to move to the Euro. :)
