Philip Bloom's "Hirano San"

Eh - are you guys watching the same video as me?

I think it looks very nice, it's the depth of field I've always wanted. Yeah, the overall look is too contrasty for my tastes, but it's not as if that will be mandatory.

Philip - I actually have a folder on my Mac Pro labeled "Bloom" and it contains most of your work ... going all the way back to the stuff you shot with the HV20 & EX1. Absolutely beautiful stuff. I return to this folder often for inspiration and ideas. I just added Hirano San to this folder.

I definitely would not interpret the negativity as an attack on your style ... composition ... artistry ... camera work ... whatever. If someone wants to say, "Bloom's work sucks!", then like Matt Gottshalk pointed out above, they should say it to your face!

BTW - just to be clear, I'm not some crazed Bloom stalker. I also have a folder on my Mac labeled "Guilmette." ;)

What do I expect? Some civility would be a bloody good start! Loads of cool, calm, rational people but the attitude amongst many leaves a lot to be desired.

you have my south piece which is ungraded which is very rare for me. I am not going to show you an ungraded piece of work. for me grading is part of the process. Sorry. Am sure others will, am sure Barry will given you some but I grade my work, then show it. That is how I do things.

Philip,

I'm really sorry to see such negativity on the forum. I hope it doesn't turn you off to coming here in the future.

If this helps any, just remember that for every sour acid person, there are many here who appreciate your time and effort in showing us the current state of what the camera can do.

Sincerely,

Bob Diaz

To be clear....Phillip Bloom's work and his discussion of it on a 40' screen in Hollywood was one of the most inspiring things I've seen since I started thinking about taking pictures and making movies.

Let's keep this discussion focused on the footage, with politely-worded questions and comments. Anything off-topic or of a personal nature will be terminated with extreme prejudice.

I agree as well and I have been at pains to say that the image is not rubbish but that extra wait for that extra fraction of percentage is what is getting me nervy. It will be good to see a shoot with low contrast for sure and ungraded. Most of the shots I have seen have the baked in look. Not much room for grading after that really. Again - I graded some RED and Alexa footage and when you do - you will see what the high end fuss is about. Having seen that and the flexibility it brings - going back to longop gets harder and harder adn I have a Nanoflash and although it is good it cannot compare to S-log or RAW.

Question again I ask myself is this - if I plonk the cash down for the AF100 and something better soon comes around the corner - and something will - perhaps sooner than we think - will I have buyers remorse. One can still shoot with it for years to come of course as it is a great camera but if people are as picky as they are on image quality,I know I will hate not having that extra 4 stops of Dynamic range or bit depth, or etc. That's my worry.

There will always be buyers remorse to some degree, no matter how cheap or awesome the product is. You will always say, "if I had waited another month then it would have been xxx times cheaper, or xxx times better." But you have to decide how long you can wait. If you keep waiting for the next best thing, as there will always be, then you will never get a camera, and never get to make anything with it! It's a decision only you can make, but don't spend too much time thinking about buyer's remorse. Keep your energy for creating! I've waited long enough.

I thoroughly recommend watching my short AF101 again whilst listening to the commentary i have just posted to it. http://bit.ly/9wmqHo

I simply have not had time to write the full write up yet as it's been non stop here as Barry will agree. I have a 15 hour flight tomorrow and must get some sleep before it. In the meantime I hope the commentary will answer some of your questions.

This camera is very good. It's not perfect. It's under 5k after all, but for what it offers it's very impressive and with more time I know I will get some awesome stuff out of it. I applaud Panasonic for letting prototypes out there for people like me and Filippo to play with and post with no restrictions other than say it's pre-productions. it's shows confidence but more importantly trust. Trust in people like myself and Filippo and trust in you guys.

I would NEVER recommend spending 5k on a video camera without getting your hands on it first. This is not a T2i here...when it comes out after Christmas then decide if it is for you.

I am very happy Panasonic have made a camera for the low end market here. I am also very excited by Sony's new camera but at the end of the day I want to quote something that someone said on one of the comments to "Hirano San", "Maybe I am missing something but I can't see what is different about how this camera looks compared to your other footage". That is absolutely fine by me!! I am at home shooting with any camera from my S95 through to an Arri Alexa because do you know why? It's a camera, a tool that lets me capture images. I love capturing images, whatever they are. It makes me happy and that is why I do it! Capturing images rather than discussing cameras is much more preferable to me because at the end of the day shooting is what it is all about!!

But.... you will have "buyers remorse" with just about anything electronic you buy these days. Because the second you leave the shop with it will be "old stuff", junk and some other guy will have something that is more "hip" (until that guy leaves the other shop)..

The DoP I worked for in my early days shot parts of his movies - award winning "real" movies of which some you may have seen even in America - with an Arri from 1942. It was a great camera. And he was a great cinematographer. That's all that counts. Pre-order it, re-order it, don't order it.... the problem will stay the same. At one point you need to say "yes" and start to work with what you have. And then you will find out something about yourself and your ability to shoot a piece. Finito.

Page 10 and you're still comparing this to a RED or even an Alexa? Come on. This isn't a camera that is competing with either of those, it's competing with the 5D and 7D that exist within the low to mid-range of the camera market. You can't call it bad because it doesn't compare to high end cameras intended for cinema use!

As for buyers remorse, if you put your money to something there'll always be something better that comes out in a few months. The market is always rapidly changing, some people I know paid thousands for a DigiBeta cam just before HD started to become the standard, and now they're left with a hefty SD camera when everyone wants HD.

I just don't see the point in you repeating yourself ad nauseum. Yes, this camera is not a RED or an Alexa. But it's good and has many benefits over DSLR's.

Yeah I know - but shooting with a film camera doesn't compare. The tech doesn't go out of spec quickly.Scarlet comes out ( fixed two thirds) Which is a much more capable camera aside from DOF, I would be kicking myself becasue I have had my eye on it for so long and lost patience. I am just thinking out loud b the way. I am not committed just yet but if it gets announced soon - within the next few months ( they cannot afford to wait any longer - Jim knows that) then I will say YES!!If not then I am back to the AF100.

Guess that now is the time to get the script in place and recruit actors for my feature. I have a video shoot for my songs in three weeks but I will be using an SGBlade and Nanoflash for that.

Phil - by the way disputes aside - I really applaud you for growing you tache for charity. I would like to donate to your cause - how can one do that?

It is in the same price bracket as Scarlet fixed dude.................and that is my dilemma. Am I the only one?Again - I am not committed so I am waiting. Okay to think out loud?

Honestly and in danger of getting kicked in the behind here: This is much, much, much more important than anything else in movie making. Have a good story. Find people who can give it a life. Shoot it with what you have. I cross my fingers. Because I have the greatest respect for everybody who dares to do the seemingly impossible and succeeds...... to create a movie that moves us.
