Pet Peeve

Not suddenly. It has been gradual. The forums used to be a lot looser. There was always a policy against politics and personal attacks, but we were allowed to have pretty strong differences voiced before a thread was shut down.

More people got offended, but there was also more variety, flavor and fun. As the site grew, it became apparent that the vibe changed from a laissez-faire attitude to pro-actively trying to "protect" people from anything that might be potentially offensive.

I liked it better the way it was, but nothing stays the same. It's really a private site, owned by Jarred, so he runs it the way he sees fit. Being a member is a privilege. My guess is that he believes this what is best for the largest amount of people, and I can't disagree. DVXuser has become an incredible resource over the years for pros and amateurs alike, and even though the PC attitude puts me off at times, I always come back because of the old-timers like Terry, Hudson, the Barrys, PK and a bunch of other people.

But I do miss the rip-roaring, no-holds barred debates with guys like Pookie and J Barnes. Those taught me a lot.

Sounds like I missed the party. :( ...and 'Pookie was Banned' sounds like a great title for something, like a band or a sitcom.

Don't get me wrong, this site is still the single-best resource for this stuff I've ever found.

But I learned as much through heated disagreements as anything else. It's sort of like a small party with friends that suddenly opens up to the world. The rules change to keep order. It's just different.

Besides the disagreements, it was fun to gang up on the noobs asking about the DVX "clunk", following Pookie's links that were NC-17 (at least...), Photoshopping pics of each other, etc.

Yeah, and there was a time when Terry didn't have that damn cow bell, and Horse had an avatar that didn't keep me up at night.

Suddenly I feel old....

A new pet peeve for me is that every other frickin' commercial these days has a sound-alike of that "do-do-ta-do" song from Juno (Anyone Else But You).

Did I jump threads somehow? EDIT: Forgot this was actually on topic ... my bad.

So, idealistically speaking, do you think the community could gain from a sub-forum where the rules were more lenient, but could only be accessed after 1000 or 2000 posts? Considering it would take so long to get that many posts, you'd be more likely to have built a relationship with the community than come in and just flame people.
