Pet Peeve

Okay, here's something that bugs me. A new user comes on board, searches through the entire forum and adds one line to the bottom of a bunch of old threads, bringing them back up to the top of the first page for no particular reason.

I just noticed that a lot of the threads I have been following on the Screen Grabs section have been relegated to pages 2 and 3 and there's a bunch of old threads on the first page now.

Okay, that's it. No big deal but is kind of a pain in the butt.

Re: Pet Peeve

Ironic foreshadowing: In a few months I wouldn't be surprised if this thread popped back up. ;D

I know what you mean. There are some threads that are so old there's no point in bringing it back to life. Let'm die gracefully.

Re: Pet Peeve

I don't mind the occasional one coming back up but not when a bunch of old threads pushes newer, active ones to another page...

Oh and here's another thing I'm pissed off about today....my Web site has been down for 24 frickin' hours and here's the funny part:

The biggest graphic on my ISP's Web site says "Zero Down Time"...

http://www.powweb.com

Just pissed me off (did I say that already?)

Re: Pet Peeve

Interesting that you mentioned your web host. Not even 1 minute ago I signed up for a new web host for my laundryday.com website.

Interesting that the web hosts website never goes down but the customers sites do. Hmmmmm Hope your site is back and running soon. It's my only connection to the beautiful scenery of Washington state.

Re: Pet Peeve

Powweb was down due to a DOS attack! I went to the site and checked the chat area. Our good freinds "The Hackers" are off to an early start this year ;)

Re: Pet Peeve

My site is finally back up after 28 hours downtime. I'm so excited, I had to tell someone!!

Okay, I'm going to take my pills now :D

Re: Pet Peeve

dag yo!!!

my Arizona Train clip from Screen Grabs is knocked down to page 4 already! i only posted that last weekend. bummer!

maybe i'll go post and bring it to the top again! ::)

I can understand a little if this was from anonymous users that had found the thread through a search engine. They might be inclined to reply directly from there instead of searching around.

Also, in some ways it's the fault of the bulletin board and/or owner of the board. If the board provided more help to the user, especially based on their experience level (less = more help), then it might solve some of these issues.

For example, the board software could easily close commenting on threads older than a certain age. Or, it could provide a warning message if someone decided to reply on a thread over a certain age.

I've found that it becomes all too easy to blame the user for problems that are really with the tool, in this case the board software.

Re: Pet Peeve

I wasn't really blaming anyone actually, it was just frustrating this morning to find 2 pages of unread posts and a lot of them were old so if anything is to blame, I think you are right, it's the software. No offense meant to Bermudaforce but I can already see he has a good sense of humor 8)

Re: Pet Peeve

Often times I see where people refer someone to an old thread as they, no doubt, are tired of answering the same questions over and over. Well, the newbie darts off to dust off this old thread and after reading 75 pages on Matt McDermitt, decides he has a few questions of his own... or at least wanted to add one of these :) or maybe one of these ;) oh sure... you'll get the occasional ;D or the ::) but this is the guy to watch out for :-* (not that there's anything wrong with that) :D :-/

Now where was I... oh, yeah... newbie adds a post to the thread, thread resurfaces, gold and platinum members are miffed that there could still exist someone who didn't *already* know this piece of information. I know 'cuz I fit in that category myself sometimes. Then again, we gotta remember that we all have 'gaps' in our knowledge and from time to time need some remedial learnin'. :-X

Re: Pet Peeve

My bad, just blame me dude. I was responsible for bringing back a lot of the old pages back to the top. I had no idea pages would come back to the front. Didn't mean to frustrate anybody. ..
How in the world Bluespider get that picture of me in that superman outfit?

Re: Pet Peeve

I'm resurrecting this thread, because I hate it when ancient threads are brought back to life. Isn't it annoying that this old thread has been dug out of the ground like a corpse to be paraded around? I wish new users wouldn't dig these smelly old threads up.

Hmmm... The timing of your resurrection is too close to the original posting of this thread to have maximum comedic impact. A few more weeks of ripening... or, shall we say, decomposing... would add to the inherent humor. ::) :D ;)
