perfect plan

Guys,

I have Vegas, PAL/NTSC monitor. Live in NYC.
Still did decide what to buy DVX A or DVX AE (PAL).

Anyone know if shooting PAL and next transfering master copy of my films to NTSC (using DV ATLANTIS software =175$ on dvfilm.com) makes sense? If the quality of NTSC tape (transfered from PAL using ATLANTIS) still will be "full" NTSC quality - I would go for this plan. But if you tell me that making transfer from PAL to NTSC using ATLANTIS gives less resolution and general quality of the image that "regular" NTSC I would not go for it.

I just want to be able to have:
1) PAL copies for European Film Festivals
2) NTSC copies for US Film Festivals
3) and if...the movie is great and Big Studio wants to buy it and make a blow up to film - I still would give them PAL copy to do it (PAL has 20% better vertical resolution which makes better film transfer)

Thanks for your opinion,
Voytek Stitko

Voytek, Voytek, Voytek

Are you planning to stay in the States? Or are you planning on going to Europe?

If you are staying; I'd think your life would be easier with the 'A'...

Now quit asking the same thing over and over!

Re: perfect plan

So, I am planning to stay in USA for now.
I am planning to go with PAL only because I figured out that:
1) I can edit my PAL footage (got Vegas and pal/ntsc monitor)
- this I will send to usa festivals and...if the movie is wanted by a BIG STUDIO they will get better quality transfer from PAL (20%better res than NTSC)

2) I just learned that I can transfer my PAL movie (using VEGAS, ATLANTIS SOFTWARE for 175$ or use those transfer suites in the city) to NTSC and I will get "full" NTSC copy of the same movie...
- this one to be sent to american festivals

3) I am from POland and sitill didnot get my green card so in case i will have to go back ... i will get my pal camcorder to make movie there.

Does it make sense now?
Sorry for my questions on the forum but thanks to you guys I learned so much in last 2 months.

Re: perfect plan

You know what, those guys who sell dvxuser batteries (they advertise on this very fourum) are really good guys.

I purchased 4 of those batteries from them and they emailed me that if i will wait a little bit they will send me a new version which will last longer than the first one.

Nice.

Those "guys" whoever they are, ;) are indeed great. I wonder if "they" will ever read this message? hmmmm, who knows, just thought I would agreee with you Voytek, that "they" are indeed great human beings.
I do have to dissagree with your idea to go with pal, living in the US, however, if you have a plan to get it done, then do it. I just think that it will end up being more of a headache than anything. BTW, you will take a slight quality losss using Atlantis, and vegas will give you an even bigger quality loss in the conversion. But if most of your stuff is going to the UK, I guess that wouldn't be a problem would it. Do I sound drunk rigth now? I feel a little drunk, even though I don't drink. Hmmmmmm.

Re: perfect plan

Voytek, I know you're going to be making a big investment here, and want to choose the right camera, but basically every response to all your posts asking the same question contained the same answer...

1)There will be a quality loss when converting to PAL/NTSC (or vice-versa). How favorable the result is depends on the conversion process, as well as the type/style of the footage. Also, any conversion (in this case, a downconversion), does not simply squeeze the higher rez into the lower rez. It has to interpolate the pixels/frames/lines from one format to another. Depending on the conversion method, this could result in a lower quality than if it were natively captured in the "lower" rez to begin with.

2)If you're going to be working in an NTSC world, then shooting PAL may be more than it's worth in the area of technical quality. Take note that the large majority of other DVXUsers here from the NTSC regions use NTSC DVX's. Technical quality is only one of the many elements involved in producing a quality project. I would actually put efficiency of my workflow above the technical quality (especially with such a marginal quality increase of the PAL DVX).

It sounds more as if you want to shoot on a PAL cam, even with all the responses to the contrary you receive. I do not doubt that anyone who responds to your posts here only wants to make sure that you do not make a decision that you regret. However, if you truly want to work in PAL despite all of these responses, then I can only say, "Go for it!" :) You can be the pioneer, and report back as to your experiences with it. That would be a great resource for other DVX users for sure!
