People still buying the DVX?

I'm thinking of selling my 35-hour 100B; it's pristine and I've got everything it came with. Got a D90 not long after I bought it from B&H, followed by a Canon DSLR... $2500 camera's worth $1100 if I'm lucky I suppose!

Who's into these? Film students? I know a guy with a production house who has six of 'em, says he's yet to find a true video camera that "looks" that "right" to him.

I'm a 15 year old freelance, and i film with one. so id say alot of skate filmers or action sport filmers overall

I am using mine for a documentary currently even though I have a 60d. The dvx can record for as long as your tape and it has xlr inputs and an awesome preamp.

Loads of them go on ebay for between 800-1000 pounds, don't know about the U.S market though. it's ideal for students still after all this time, much better to learn on than cheap hdv cams, as it feels like a condensed eng cam, (proper controlls in all the right places to encourage manual shooting, mechanical zoom, proper audio controlls etc) and it's getting popular with extreme sport videographers as it's now cheap enough to replace the battered old vx2000's they have been using for years, you'll easily get a grand for it if it's in good condition.

Yeah, my favorite thing about it became how nice the preamps and converters sound - I did some "music demos" with mine, and mic'd a guitar amp right into the DVX, and then put those tracks in ProTools. Very musical sounding preamps. Surprised the heck out of me, the money I've spent on Apogee gear.

Check this out, much of the guitar recorded right into the DVX:

Pound for pound, moment in time, probably the best camera ever.

I recently purchased an HPX170. I seriously considered just getting a DVX100b.

I bought a pair of DVX100As about 5 years ago and despite all the other cameras and stuff I have acquired since, they still bring a few grand every month each. Cash makes a pretty strong argument against unloading something.

There are only three "negatives" with the DVX if you ask me:

1. SD only - Not much of a problem in many situations though, as most broadcast and web stuff is still SD.

2. Shoots to tape only - Some people want that though. And you could buy an external unit, like a Firestore anyway.

3. Doesn't do variable frame rates, no overcranking. - Though most people don't use that feature much anyway, it is nice.

Camera works great, handles great, picture is great, works superb in low-light - as good as any camera. Cost is also right. You can find a high quality, lightly used DVX100b for a very reasonable price.

I'm not surprised at all. Like I said, pound for pound the best camera ever.

One of the best I have used. I considered selling my 100A several times but like others, it still brings in steady cash month to month.

The only piece of "tech" I am legitimately in love with. Still brings a smile to my face every time I turn it on and hear that clunk.

Exactly! got 2 days shooting this weekend and i find the idea of handing 2 or 3 nice cheap disposable tapes over to the director at the end of the day a lot more reassuring than handing over a grands worth of p2 cards...

They were cool but the HVX doubled the sales of the DVX... Pretty amazing to consider since it was twice as much. As cool as SD was, it's now yesterday's news....

In our studio's 47 year operation, we often bought identical still cameras. Seldom in our film and video department, but we have 2 of those DVXs. Great cameras. Its time to go into our museum hasn't come yet, but its getting there. It will get its own glass case beside the vx1000.

I've been using mine for freelance work and still get a decent amount of shooting work each month. I'll buy a new camera, but i'll never part with my dvx's.

For Green screen you can turn it on it's side and get 720 vertical lines, so it can be edited into a HD project... I'm keeping mine after the AF comes in... at least for a while... besides, I've got the Century .6 wide angle and close up diopter for it... Great little cam... I like the story about the "clunk"...

fantastic little camera

fantastic little camera

I'm new to web blogging, and this was the camera I bought. Painstaking research kept bringing me back to the DVX100B. So I finally picked it up off ebay.

Funny side story: Guy misspelled panasonic so not many were watching that great little camera with 50 hours for $850.

A firestore and my first "pro" camera was a home run.
