PD170 "better" than a HVX200

I shot a resolution test chart with my PAL PD170 and it shows about 540-550 lines of resolution.

I read the HVX200 will only resolve 540 lines.

If I bump to HD with something like RED GIANT wouldn't it look real close to what a HVX200 puts out.

Aside from variable frame rates... bumped to HD the PD170 should look close, right?

Thoughts?

Thanks.

The short answer, as far as i know, is no. The HVX is HD and, while SD can be scaled up, it can't become HD. It won't compete with the HVX on that level. I don't know a lot about the 170, but I've heard its a great workhorse for Docs and broadcast. Others may be able to give you a better answer.

Yikes. Trying to get a few more miles out of that old dead horse isn't a bad idea but I don't think that your information is either correct or very flattering. Personally I'm also highly biased against the 170 as just a poor camcorder especially in terms of it's audio capabilities, but to each their own. The EX line is the first sony camcorder that I've been somewhat interested in... but to each their own.

I checked that thread and it didn't make reference to the PD170.

An indie filmmaker friend of mine confirmed that although the picture coming from the HVX200 is "HD size" he only sees 530ish lines of actual resolution in that larger picture when he shot a resolution test chart.

Whether it is the CCD or lens that limits that resolution doesn't really matter.

It only puts out about 530 lines...

My PAL PD170 puts out more lines of resolution. A 600 dollar HV20 puts out more actual lines of resolution than the HVX

My question was if I up-rez footage from the PD170 how would it compare.

Would it look close to what the HVX200 puts out?

Thanks.

As said before, any frame of video shot under any circumstances with an HVX will blow away any frame of video shot on a PD170. No question. Just look at the pics.
