PCMCIA slot transfer and HVX200a footage view

Dear DVXUsers,

I have an HVX200a and a Dell Inspiron 8600 (about 5 years old).

1. I had my Dell restored to it's original factory form. I have been using it to drag and drop from my camera to a Lacie Brick. It works great. I can view the footage on the P2 cards with the P2 Viewer. Works great. I cannot however view footage from the harddrive in the computer or from the LaCie. What do I need to install to do this?

2. My Dell has a PCMCIA slot, when I plug the P2 card in I cannot dump the files into the computer nor I can view any footage. What do I need to do?

3. What editing software do you recommend to buy for the Dell to be able to handle the HD files? Is there anything cheap? Or should I just pay an editor with all the gear and no hassles for me?

4. Are there seminars, books or DVDs for understanding all the tech terms I do not know like codec, etc...?

Kindest Regards and thanks for your time,

1) Use P2 Viewer's "Virtual Card" capability to access and play back footage on your hard drives.

2) Install the P2 PCMCIA/CardBus drivers.

3) Premiere Pro CS4.1 or Grass Valley EDIUS 5.

Barry,

First of all I would like to thank you for writting the book and making the DVD. Without them i would have been lost and have had a half a clew what to do with all the options and settings. Thanks!

Where do I get the Cardbus driver?

Which one do you prefer the Adobe or the Grass Valley?

Thanks,

As for EDIUS or Adobe... that's a really tough choice. I bought both. I like both for different things. Adobe is a full suite, with After Effects and exquisite integration between all the apps. EDIUS is a standalone app. But EDIUS is fast, and Premiere is... annoying. :) It takes six mouseclicks to do what Vegas does in one. But for AVCHD, it's the bomb diggity.

For P2, they're about an equal match. You'd really have to download the trial versions of each and see which you prefer.
