I got my HVX200 and I'm wondering if there is a PCMCIA card that i can add to my Mac Pro to avoid buying the over priced 5-card drive. Any ideas?

I researched this extensively a couple of weeks ago. Communicated with both state side and European companies.

None are available.

However, I don't know what you mean by "overpriced."

Expensive -- yes, but you don't know research and development costs were to bring this product to the market, do you?

Good ol' PC laptop. Double PCMCIA slots. Firewire/USB to external hard-drive and bring to the G5.

Yup.

Imac?

Imac?

I have a 20" Intel IMac and am trying to figure out my lowest cost scenario to get footage into Final Cut. Only options are firewire and USB in. Do I have to buy a P2 store? Assuming I'm not in a hurry, can I just record on P2 and capture the footage via firewire by playing back in the camera ?

Yep, the lowest cost way is to use the camera as a card reader. No need to capture via playing it on the camera, you can use the camera in 1394 DEVICE mode to act as an external removable storage device, and just copy the card contents off of it to your hard disk (although Apple recommends that instead of copying, you should make a Disk Image of the card contents.)

Works for some, not for others. There are plenty of threads where people have written complaining about glitched transfers, "dropouts" in frames, etc. Always from transferring on a Mac. Apple's gone so far as to recommend that people not import footage directly from the card, but instead to make a disk image to the hard disk and import from there.

Not saying you're wrong Barry but I've transffered a few terabytes from P2 on PBg4s and had no problems whatsoever.

Your milage may vary though.

I've had no problems with P2 transfer to Powerbook G4. Of course, I just bought a MB Pro Core2Duo and sold the PB. But I primarily use the FS-100 anyway. Still, never a glitch when importing from P2 into the old PB.

use a standard firewire cable to mini fw 6pin. use your camera as the dock.. it's the cheapest and easiest way, if you can spare your camera..

Interesting...that explains a lot. We've had similar problems with OSX not allowing access to cards, but copying from files is fine. It seems to not correctly recognize the card as a valid mounted volume (even though it shows as one on the desktop).
