PCMCIA CARD READER for PC desktop

We have a G4 and Mac Pro but are kind of burning out on the Mac P2 drama.

We have an AMD 64 X2 4400 + 2.2 GHz with 2 GIG RAM. Running Windows XP SP 3. It is a stable machine so we are considering using it as an offload station.

It has 3 open bays on the front: kind of like this image

Question, what specific PCMCIA CARD READERs will work in this machine and for P2 cards?

If i install 3 of them can I offload 3 at same time without performance issues or data corruption or ????

That'll probably work, but it's a rear-facing loader; you can get ones from other sources that have a 5.25" or 3.5" drive bay opening on the front.

Well... depends on what you're offloading to, etc.

If you're trying to copy them all to one hard disk, the bottleneck will be the hard disk speed. If you're offloading them all to a RAID, then yeah, it'll be fast. You might saturate the PCMCIA bus's maximum transfer rate trying to offload three cards simultaneously, but it'll still work.

Barry, will this adapter work for reading off the P2 card and into an express card slot on the front of a desktop computer?

I'm looking for some kind of adapter that can go from PCI (PCMCIA?) and into one of the slots on the front of my HP desktop. I have an SD Card slot, Compact Flash slot, Smart Media slot, and a Pro Duo slot. Are there any P2 card reader adapters that will plug into any of these slots so I can transfer my footage from the P2 card onto the hard drive? And if so, where can I order one online? Thanks.

I'm investigating wether this adaptor will work>>>

I have emailed Panasonic Tech Support, asking if it is compatible with our P2 Cards.

Let me know if you've found something that worked.

Thanks!

Hugh

I would avoid this adapter for P2 use.....it has no eject button.

It seems to be more of a solution for a card that you'll be plugging in and leaving in....like a cellular inet card.

Check this one out.

http://www.amtron.com/reader/pcdtp110cs.htm

Its compatible with P2 and it says you can even use it as an external drive because its an enclosed case except for the back where you plug in the cable. Its the only P2 card reader I could find for a desktop that isn't rear loading and doesn't have to be installed in a drive bay....oh, and doesn't cost you an arm and a leg! Its not Vista 64 bit compatible though. :(

Anyone using this Amtron card reader yet? Any reviews on this? Works with all Series of P2 cards? R,A & E series? Any limitations?

I got a reply from the guys at Amtron and they reaffirmed that the PCDTP110CS card reader does not have Vista or XP 64 bit support but does have 32 bit Vista/XP support. Figures. Now I'm back to square one.

Anyone know of any front loading PCMCIA card readers that are Vista 64 bit compatible AND can read P2 cards?

im just getting up and running with the amtron....a couple blue screens later still trying to work out bugs. had to uninstall zonealarm...still testing

Sure, go ahead and rub it in, guy! Hahaha! I'm guessing you have a 32 bit OS? Gotta love those blue screens, man! Let me know how it works out.

not working out good so far.

installed amatron + p2 drivers > can see card + play files in P2 viewer > blue screen- srescan.sys > remove zonealarm > can see card + play files in P2 viewer > try to import using p2cms > blue screen: IRQL Not Less Or Equal To > call support > told to swap slots in hopes of avoiding IRQ conflict > swap slots >

reinstall p2 drivers > can see card + play files in P2 viewer > try to import using p2cms > blue screen: Page Fault In Non Paged > call support > told to reinstall p2 drivers > same blue screen > Amtron says: no solution (also stating 64GB cards have not been tested and they have no other advice for me)

install shotput pro > blue screen: IRQL Not Less Or Equal To

if anyone has had these issues and has a solution please let me know.

update: tried offloading to internal drive instead of external sata and (so far) NO BLUE SCREEN...Im about to get teary eyed Im so happy (ya right).

But if it turns out to be the sata drive was causing some sort of conflict at least I can work around that. I will have to test it with FW 800 and 400 ports and then a different sata box

so the amtron works on 32-bit vista..correct? If it does i think i might just grab this and a powerbook g4 and call it a day.
