There has to be a way to dump P2's on a macbook pro right? I know I'm a little behind but........So is there an adapter of some sort. I saw a usb to pcmia adapter will that work without affecting transfer time too much. I found a great deal on a macbook pro and was so disapointed to find out I couldn't use it with my P2 card. Someone wanna fill me in?

cheers

There are several ways to offload a card to an MBP. No cheap USB adapter will work though.

You can offload through the camera, in 1394 DEVICE mode. Or you can use the five-slot reader that Panasonic sells, the PCD020 or whatever it's called. Or you can use the P2 Store as a slot reader.

Sometime in the next few weeks duel-systems will release a PCMCIA->ExpressCard adapter designed to allow MBPs to offload P2 cards too.

Thanks Barry that's what I was looking for. Any Idea what the adapter will be priced at?

Barry, I have a MACBOOKPRO ( with Final Cut Express so for editing I'm going to
use a Final Cut Pro station elsewhere as I can't currently afford to upgrade my
laptop to Final Cut Pro. )

However, even though Final Cut Express won't capture 720 24P in SD much less
HD, is the P2 Genie a solution? I'm attempting to understand it. If I got a P2
Genie, could I play the P2 card via Firewire from the camera into a hub -the
MBP has only one Firewire port - and then capture to a Lacie through the laptop
using the P2 Genie without ever opening any NLE?

So, Firewire out from HVX-200 to hub, then one Firewire to computer and one
to Lacie...does that sound like it would work?

Thanks!

Doesn't sound too promising to me, but I haven't used a firewire hub for video work.

I'd recommend instead that you look into getting either the duel-systems PCMCIA->ExpressCard adapter, or if you really want to use the camera as a card reader instead, you could get an ExpressCard->Firewire adapter and add a second firewire bus to your Mac. Then you could definitely do what you describe.

Awesome, thanks!

Oh yes, any opionion on the P2 Genie?

Also, for all who may be interested, when editing with the MacBookPro, an external Lacie and capturing from a deck or camera, I've used a Belkin 6 port Firewire hub
which has been essential since the MacBookPro (new this spring) has only one Firewire port.
