PC to Mac FCP workflow

We have a client who wants to bring in a PC formatted Firewire drive onto which he has transfered P2 media.

Since our FCP edit system is on a G5 Mac, I don't believe the computer will read his firewire drive.

Does anyone out there have any experience to share on a good way to transfer this media so we can work with it on our FCP/Mac system?

Thanks for any advice. :dankk2:

As long as the drive is formatted Fat32, there will be no issues. In fact, it is best to have your P2 dump drives formatted Fat32 in case you need to connect it to a Mac or a PC.

The Mac should be able to read of the NTFS formatted drive but will not write to it...

So you should be able to just plug it in and transfer to your Mac... no need for FAT32 formatting...

I only set up drives to be FAT32 when working in Avid... that way you can work between Windows and MAC... but the 4gig limit can be a pain...

Cheers

I only recommended FAT32 as a format for the drive you copy P2 cards onto...so that it can work on either MAC or PCs. Since P2 also has a 4GB limit, this works well.

hi, why is the fat32 4gb limit a problem? does it not allow to put more than that? also, are people reformatting their fat32 drives much? do they get overly fragmented or eventutally run slower??

In FAT32, any one file has a limit of 4GB. That's fine for storing P2 data -- the P2 cards themselves are FAT32 -- but it isn't all that useful if you want to use it for a project drive, if you're planning to include or create assets which are larger.
