PC Firewire workflow

Hello again people,

Can someone go through the workflow of the Firewire DV input into a PC?

I don't have a Firewire I/O yet, and I'm not very impressed with the S-Video capture.

Can you drag and drop DV files from Windows? Something like a tape drive that Windows recognize.

...Or do you actually have to some sort of capture via camcorder player. I'd be shocked if I had to do this.

Well, prepare to be shocked.  If you're capturing from tape and not something like a Quickstream HDD, then yes, you capture by playing the tape.

Your NLE should control the camcorder/player for you, though.

I guess, I should have been more specific.

Is there a method of taking a string of raw data from the DV tape, without going through the NLE?

When I heard people talking about "dumping" a DV stram to Avid, I figured this is what they did.

And also, does your PC recognize that a media device has been connected to your system.

Re: PC Firewire workflow

Put simply: No.

You capture from a DV tape via firewire like you would capture from tape media via any other interface (e.g. S-Video).  It will take one hour to capture one hour of footage, for example.  "Dumping" a DV stream is just an oft-used term to make the process of capturing sound more interesting. :)

Re: PC Firewire workflow

vegas for example, has an entirly seperate capture program you can start up without starting vegas. Firestore also makes a stand alone dv capture program.

Re: PC Firewire workflow

If you're asking whether you can hook up your camcorder and have the PC treat it as a drag-and-drop media storage device, like a memory card or even a floppy drive, then no. You will have to go through some kind of capture software.
