Paypal is Appalling

I sold a lens right here on DVXUser. Buyer paid with Paypal. I linked my Paypal account to a savings account in order to withdraw ($500/month limit, BTW) the money. In order to do this, I had to allow Paypal to use this newly linked bank account as my primary source account for purchases. I didn't like this but had no choice; I figured I would simply choose a different source when it came time to buy something.

Except that Paypal does not heed your wish. After choosing my credit card as my source, Paypal headed straight to the bank account instead and, because the funds weren't there, I got slapped with a $29 overdraft fee. (I had transferred the money away from the linked account precisely because I did not trust Paypal.) I have since created seller's (bank account-linked) and buyer's (credit card-linked) accounts.

Just a warning to others...

I closed my Paypal so long ago, after they screwed me. I paid for something with it, the money was deducted from my account, but the seller said he never recieved funds. I inquired about that to PP, they said they had "no record" of the deduction from my account, even though my bank records showed it.

I will never use Paypal after what happened.

Since you brought it up....... :)

For many years I used PayPal to receive/send payments for ebay items and also for freelance work while overseas. It was fine. When we started doing humanitarian work overseas we used it to receive support from back home. Friends, family, and DVXusers would send money to my personal PayPal account and then we'd go and buy helmets with the money or pay for students scholarships. For 2-3 years everything was great and more than 2,000 helmets were donated using money transferred via PayPal. Buuuuut last year PayPal put a complete hold on my account because their "system" noticed some of the payments said "donation" in the note section. Since my account wasn't listed as a non-profit, they red flagged it! They said I need to prove I'm a registered non-profit in the US. Which means filing for 501c3 status with the IRS - $750 fee (plus 3-6 months to complete the massive amounts of paperwork and wait for approval). They said this "policy" was to help "protect against terrorists using PayPal for terror funding"). I told them, "No. In this case your policy is preventing helmets from being put on kids heads." PayPal was my only way to receive funding while overseas so I tried to open another account but my bank account number had been flagged so any account I tried opening was deactivated.

The moral of this story is, PayPal hates children.

But something good did come from all of this. Our charity website now has it's own credit card processing so we no longer have to abide by PayPal's rules and policies.

FREEDOM!!!!!

I hate terrorists, especially using motorcycle helmets. Weapons of mass protection, if you ask me. LMAO, Yeah I have been drinking tonight. But I still hate Paypal.

Jordan - the link is small where it states "choose other funding options" and then it takes you to another page in which you can choose your bank account or credit card.

I've used paypal for large ticket items $5000 and have yet to be screwed. I'm about to sell my d80 and seriously don't have issues, neither selling or buying.

I used paypal once, then my account was breeched by someone in Russia. I've spent about 2 hours trying to resolve the issues with them, but it isn't resolvable apparently. Also, even though I have new debit cards, as soon as I try to make a new account, they flag my current card.

I've always just made sure that all the accounts are separated properly, so the only credit card account it links to is one I don't use for anything - I do quite a bit of business through it, and to be frank, I need it. What I then do is make sure the balance gets regularly transferred to a deposit account at my on-line bank. They don't allow electronic transfers or direct debits on this account, so once paypal pay in, they cannot get it back.

As for ebay payments - the worst thing is finding transactions from a while ago - it is so difficult.

They are pretty intransigent, but there really isn't an alternative - and while ebay requires paypal to be one payment choice, they win, win.

I thought I was the only one coz leb isn't authorized :) embarrassed to say it each time. This thread makes me feel good and un-lonely...

Perhaps I have been lucky. I've used PayPal for more transactions than I can recall, and have yet to have a PayPal problem (although I have had some trouble on occasion with sellers, which PayPal has resolved in my favor, but quick...)

I always use credit card with PayPal, though. Nobody gets access to the bank accounts...

10 years, 700+ Ebay transactions (buying and selling), have read all the Paypal horror stories , no issues with Paypal. But that's just me.

The only way I've ever used paypal is to buy stuff, using a credit card. I would never ever, ever, ever link to my bank account... too many horror stories... they're too unaccountable and poorly regulated... pass.

Paypal's been pretty good to me, got my money back when seller's tried to screw me a couple times.

That said... every time I use paypal the exchange rate is about 2.5 behind what it should be. Hey, I know they have to make money but that adds up to a lot when buying heaps of camera equipment/ninja turtle figures.
