The NIGHT tests
Day test available here : vimeo.com/30097165

I've receivedyesterday from SLR MAgic their new wide and fast angle, a 12mm f/1.6 (24mm in 24X36 eq.) in a Micro Four Third mount.
This is, to my opinion, an incredible lens, fast and wide, and there is no visible distortion. The focus and aperture rings are very smooth. It is all made in metal.

-The lens has 12 aperture blades like cinema lens.
-The 1.6 is a T stop aperture, eq. to f/1.4 aperture !
-No visible distortion and optical correction instead of digital so people look normal at edge of photo.
-No vignette (you'll need a step up ring for filters...)
-When macro the lens is 3cm from object only !!!!

The 12mm lens is a whole different lens than the Magic Toy 11mm. it is a lot better but at the same time it is not the same price. it is $500 US. it is very creative but has good performance as well. Macro ability is amazing on this lens.

- Lens length 2.92 inches
- Front filter thread 58mm
- Weight is 325 grams

In EU and US the lens will be SLR Magic HyperPrime 12mm F1.6 with a SLR Magic black ring. (TBA. around End November or December)
In other parts of the world it will be the Noktor HyperPrime 12mm F1.6 with the Noktor green ring -the one I'm using for this test (available in October)

From Andrew from SLR Magic : "It had been a big challenge designing this lens and living up to the Noktor Ultra Fast Lens name. F1.6 is the largest aperture we can get this UWA lens to go. It works great indoors but flares when there is strong light. When you stop down to f2 there are no more problems. It was a debate for us if this was a good decision or not. Making this lens F1.6 with some flaws or make it F2 or F4 with no flaws wide open but smaller aperture."

Man... this is so great. You might have just kept me from buying the 12mm F2 from Olympus. I really love the Nokton .94 25mm and this seems like a great little lens and cheaper than the Olympus. I take it there's no auto focus which I only care about if I'm using a lens on steadicam.

Cheers and great looking footage. Love the daytime exteriors.. Man it's a beauty of a lens.. Sharp and great great DOF.

Thanks for showing this off... Any idea when it'll be available in the states? I'd like to buy one right now! A wide fast lens is the only major thing that I'm missing right now....

Thanks so much for showing!

Thanks Justyn ! :)
The night version is online in 10mn :)
The lens is available end november beg december in US

This is unbelievable, just amazing stuff, beautiful lens... I predict the price will skyrocket from the initial $500, just as the price on the Voigtlander 0.95 25mm did...

Thanks for the footage, seb33! Btw., what ND filter were you using? With a lens this wide, I wonder about ND filters...

Seb... Thanks so much again. I bought a C-mount lens after I saw your work before and I'm kind of happy that I did cause it's a really cool lens but it's almost a toy lens and so soft and so different that I've only been able to use it by itself. it does not cut well with other lenses and is a very interesting look, but not what I want for most of my shooting...

Now this lens here.. Man you are onto something. With the Teleconveter option we get really close to the 25mm Nokton and that's just awesome. I've often though that if the 25mm were wider it would be just such a killer lens for almost anything... And viola look at this beauty.

Do you have anything you've found that you don't like about the rig? So if I have a 62mm fader, I would need to get something larger and get step-up rings to avoid vignetting? Same for every filter?

Man... I do really love this forum and courteous people like yourself. This is what keeps me coming back and back and back again. I also am kind of on the fence about what platform I'm going to shoot my feature film on. I do need to have multiple cameras, and part of me wants to wait till November 3rd to see what's up, and the other half of me says that the Gh2 is just such a great cheap camera that I should just go with that... To put you on the spot, what do you think about the current state of cameras? Options for the GH2? etc.

Cheers and keep up the trailblazing work brother. I know we all greatly benefit from your awesome footage and wonderful reporting back to us. Peace and much respect!

Thanks OldCorpse :)
I'm using L.C.W Mark II ND Variable filter from Light Craft. Mine is a 62mm adapted with step up ring, but you should need a 68 or 72mm to avoid the vignetting. I'll try ASAP.

Wow. I liked the idea of the Olympus, but the price tag and being the small silver thing kinda had me on the fence. This lens however, this is down to business! I would say I'm gonna try to pick this up next. Awesome for sure!

You should need a larger filter, such as 68 or 72mm, my 62mm is vignetting
