Panorama Lab's 4K Projector

Thought this was interesting. Another example of the movement to 4K and beyond, this time from a company called Panorama Labs. Their "MOD-RAY 'DSSF' Digital Solid State Film" projector is capable of 4K, and for the future, digital 70mm and "digital IMAX".

Their website is found here.

Sounds familiar... ;-)

Interesting tech. From what I understand of it, I'd be surprised to see this working in a practical way.

1) If they are relying on the polarizer to give them the contrast ratio, I wouldn't expect it to be super-high, unless they have some new kind of polarizer.

2) It seems they are using a laser as a light source. Lasers are great for making bright spots, but lighting up an entire theatre screen at once requires power. If you thought existing projector bulbs were expensive, I'd think an equivalent-power continuous laser source would be quite a bit more.

3) Anyone playing with a laser pointer has seen the laser "speckle" effect caused by self-interference of the light beam. This effect makes any laser-projected image hard to watch, unless you make the source coherence length super-short. Maybe they've done this, I don't know.
